DESCRIPTION

Ondansetron, the generic alternative to Zofran, treats many conditions, such as vomiting. It was originally made for use in humans, but is often prescribed by veterinarians to treat cats and dogs. It can be especially beneficial for animals who are vomiting after chemotherapy. It also treats sleep apnea and itching (pruritus) in certain cases.

  • These receptors are found in the terminals of the vagus nerve, in the central brain (in the chemoreceptor trigger zone region), and in enteric gastrointestinal tract neurons.

    Dose and Administration: Tablets are sold individually in 4 and 8 mg strengths.

    Possible Side Effects: Ondansetron is a human drug prescribed infrequently for the treatment of animals. However, it is generally well-tolerated. Potential adverse reactions include:

  • Hypotension
  • Extrapyramidal clinical signs (such as head shaking)
  • Sedation
  • Constipation If you observe any unusual side effects, consult your veterinarian.

    Precautions:

  • Never administer to a dog with a known or suspected Ondansetron hypersensitivity.
  • Keep out of reach of animals and children.

    Storage Recommendations: Store in a cool and dry environment between temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees C (68 to 77 degrees F). Brief excursions permitted of 15-30 degrees C (59- 86 degrees F). Shield from light.
