Kitty nutrition basics
A few things are true of all cats:
First, they’ll thrive if they’re fed high-quality ingredients, which are easier to digest and more nutritious.
You’ll also want to think about the makeup of your adult cat’s diet. In general, an ideal dry food for adult cats includes 30% protein and 12% fat. The ideal wet food contains 8% protein and 4% fat.
Cats also need an essential amino acid called taurine, which is a heart-healthy nutrient found in fish, poultry and meat. These proteins also likely contain arginine, an amino acid that supports liver function.
All cats need plenty of fresh, clean water available at all times.
When and how to feed your cat
Adult cats can be fed twice a day or, if they prefer, multiple small meals daily. Many cats set their own eating schedules; if that is the case, it’s fine to leave out dry kibble for them to nibble.
If your cat never seems to call it quits at the food bowl, portion control is in order. Remove temptation by taking away the kibble between meals.
Personalizing your cat’s diet
Your particular kitty’s ideal meal can depend on factors including age, activity level, breed, and whether your pet is allowed to go outdoors. These factors will cause variation in your kitty’s weight, teeth, hairball production and urinary health.
Obesity, common in adult cats, can cause health conditions such as diabetes, arthritis or heart disease. If your cat is overweight, talk to your vet about switching to a lower-calorie diet.Shop low calorie formula cat food
