African cichlids are very popular with fish hobbyists because there are so many different types to choose from. There are many species of African cichlids, including the rock-dwelling cichlids from Lakes Malawi and Tanganyika. These active and intriguing freshwater fish come in a range of eye-catching colors and sizes, allowing you to create a diverse, fascinating show tank.

They are generally peaceful with fish of the same size and temperament, but may eat any fish small enough to fit into their mouths. They may also be territorial and aggressive to others of their species. Cichlids are middle-swimmers, so be sure to add some top and bottom swimmers as well. Ask a PetSmart associate to help you choose.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My all time favorite fish!!!!!! I have said this a million times that I had a favorite fish but this time I am serious. this fish is the best fish ever. when I walk out of the room or walking anywhere he will literally try to follow me in his tank what fish does that. he is the law in my tank by protecting my small fish from my other chiliads. if you are an expert on fish get 1 of these and only one because they will kill each other (I made that mistake before) but get these fish

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very beautiful fish! I would reccommend this fish to anyone that is wanting to get into the Cichlid hobby. It is a beautiful fish with bright blue coloring with orange tips on its tail fins. It is however semi aggressive, but that is par for the course with any african cichlid and should only be kept with other africans.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful, Exciting, Aggressive I purchased this fish from Petsmart 6 months ago and he's been one of my favorites. As he's matured he's become a Dark Blue with orange bottom fin and beautiful white strip down his head and back. He's active and reminds me of a barracuda in his striking ability. A word of warning however, this is not a community fish. They are quite aggressive. You want to keep them with other aggressive fish but away from the most aggressive Mbuna's. They work great with Labs, Stonii's, Frontosa's, Johanni's etc. They do poorly with Auratuses, Kenyi's and Blue Cobalt Zebra's. Also, if you think you are going to put him in with goldfish and tetra's your going to have a dissappointing next morning. Learn about him before you buy him and you will be fine. (P.S. only put 1 male per 90 Gallon Tank or they will fight often)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Fish, Intimidating Yet Intelligent When I got my electric blue cichlid, I'll admit I was a bit intimidated by the picture! As a first time cichlid owner, I was told by a close friend to get an electric blue to introduve me to the hobby and if I didn't fall in love, I wouldn't cut it as a cichlid lover. After a few days, I decided to name him Zip Around because of his tendancy to turn sharply and swim full steam ahead. I soon fell in love and got more cichlids. Although as an adult he does look fierce, he will actually eat out of my hand and he is AWESOME! I would highly reccomend to any fish owner looking to get involved in this faccinating species or just looking for a fish!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great best fish in my tank I have one of these fish and she is thriving. I have her in a 55 gal with about 14 other cichlids and she is well over 7 inches long even though the website says they only get to 5 inches. Anyway she is very happy in my tank. She is female but has not mouth brooded yet even though some of my much smaller females have already. She is very bright blue (sorry I would sent a Pic but I'm on vacation and my tank isn't with me) and she has developed a few orange spots at the very end of some of her fins. I thought they could be egg spots but I'm certain she's female because she had let one of the males breed with the females and rule the tank and shows no signs of aggression. Since she is so big no fish messes with her and she never messes with any of the other fish. Over all great fish, a little strange, but great fish and everyone who has african cichlids NEEDS to have at least one of these fish:D

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the Blue! By far one of my most favorite species of cichlids. I have many aquariums throughout my home, and one tank is full of yellow labidochromis and the electric blue. The contrast of colors offers something interesting to look at, and the blues have quirky behaviors. The only issue I've had over the years with the blue, is that you cannot have live plants (they love to dig), and you need to separate them (if you have bond pairs), or put up a divider in your tank. Other than that, they are exceptionally wonderful fish pets!
