Hi. I got a boy guinea pig 2 weeks ago. He is now 8 weeks old. Im wanting to get a second. He has been playful with me and was playful while at the store. Is it ok for them to be in the same cage or no? How big of a cage would you recommend?

    Asked by: Shawna Caylor
2 boys can be the hardest to introduce but it’s not impossible. You would want at least a 8sqft cage for them both with multiple hiding spots. They will most likely fight for dominance at first (usually chatter teeth, humping, butt sniffing and nipping) but as long as they don’t draw blood or seriously injure one another it’s ok because one will need to assert itself as the dominant male. I have 2 from different litters and they still fight for dominance and coexist just fine. I found when introducing them that giving them a bath was really helpful. It seems dumb but they kind of forget they are mad at each other and focus on the fact that they are wet. Make sure If you bathe them to make sure the water is not too deep because they hate water and will inhale it if their mouths are submerged and choke. I did it in the kitchen sink with sm. animal shampoo and it worked wonders. Additionally I would wash or replace anything in the old pig’s cage so that it no longer has his sent as well as rearrange the cage. Introduce the pigs to the cleaned or new cage at the same time so that they are both in new territory.
