    DESCRIPTION:

    Amantadine Hydrochloride is useful in temporarily relieving pain in cats and dogs. It is also used as an antiviral to combat a number of viral infections.

    Key Benefits: The mode of action of Amantadine is blockage of the nervous system's NMDA receptors in cats and dogs. This allows the medication to relieve pain. It also acts as an antiviral.

    What Results Can I Expect? Amantadine Hydrochloride is typically used to manage arthritis pain in dogs and cats, but it also relieves nerve damage-related neuropathy, serves as an antiviral, and treats the pain associated with cancer (particularly bone cancer).

    What Form Does Medication Come In? Tablet

    Dose and Administration: Tablets are sold individually in a single strength (100 mg).

    Possible Side Effects: Potential adverse reactions include:

  • Irritation
  • Gas
  • Diarrhea

    Concomitantly administering antihistamines can cause:

  • Increased Heart Rate
  • Difficulty Urinating
  • Dry Mouth

    Precautions:

  • Do not administer concomitantly with Quinidine (heart medication) or Trimethoprim-sulfa (an antibiotic). Thiazide diuretic medications may inhibit excretion of Amantadine.
  • Do not administer to a pet who is nursing or pregnant, or to a pet with untreated glaucoma, congestive heart disease, liver disease, behavioral problems, seizures, or a kidney disorder.

    Storage Recommendations: Store in a cool and dry location. 15-30 degrees C (59-86 degrees F.)
