Things to remember:

Water temperature:

Aquatic plants require a tropical community aquarium with water temperaturesranging between 72-78º F (22-26º C). Use an aquarium heater to maintainwater temperature.

Adding plants:

Whether you're just starting your aquarium or introducing new plants into your tank, make sure to add only one or two plants at a time.

Lighting:

Most tropical plants require sunlight each day, year round. The duration and consistency are essential for plants to thrive. Natural aquariums must be equipped with the means to provide 12 hours of simulated sunlight each day.

Plant fertilizer:

Fertilizer should only be added according to the dosage instructions on the label, and only when needed (as in the case of a water change). Plants will grow best if fertilized moderately and regularly after water changes rather than given larger quantities of fertilizer on a less-regular basis.

Fish and plants:

Small schooling fish are highly recommended for a natural planted aquarium; larger fish often uproot plants. The adult size and eating habitats of a fish should always be taken into consideration.

Water changes:

Test water weekly to assess water quality. It is recommended that 10% of youraquarium water be changed per week. At the very least, 25% of your aquariumwater should be changed per month. For optimal health, regular water changes not only prevent the undesirable accumulation of excess nutrients, but also remove excess nitrates and waste products of the fish and plants.

Aquarium placement:

Place your aquarium in a low-traffic area, away from direct sunlight and drafts.

Planting your natural aquarium:

Foreground plants: Usually stay very short and help fill in the front part of the aquarium.

Middle ground plants: These plants grow anywhere form 4-10 inches tall.

Background plants: These are the fastest-growing and tallest plants.

Things to watch for:

  • Poor growth
  • Brown spots on leaves
  • Plants appear weak, pale green to yellow, stems have few leaves
  • Plants cease to grow and die off
  • Stem plants have long internodes and small leaves

If you notice any of the signs described above, check your aquariumwater quality and consult an in-store Aquatics Specialist.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Plant I bought a small Amazon Sword when I planted my 10 gal tank. I had purchased a number of plants and not all did as well. Since it was a new tank growth was very slow to start. Within a month the sword filled almost a quarter of the tank with growth to the top of the tank. I transplanted the sword in the same tank and was amazed by the root system it had produced. The transplant had no effect on the sword. I recently obtained a 55 gal tank. This sword has taken a show place in my new tank and a new small sword has taken it's place in the 10 gal. The substrate in my tanks is a gravel substrate. I used the liquid fertiliser in the tank for about a month. Now I haven't used it for some time and the plants still seem to thrive. I also have an air pump that is used several hours each day to aerate the water.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice but misleading package I love this plant. It's hardy and looks lovely. The only quarrel I have is with the count shown in the package. It says 2-4 count. That must mean leaves because whenever I buy one I only ever have one plant. $10 is a lot for one plant but it is very healthy

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I bought this plant a few weeks ago and it is thriving. This is my first planted aquarium and I accidentally bought too little gravel at first so some of the roots weren't fully buried, but that didnt seem to bother the plant at all. It grows about 2 new leaves every week and looks wonderful. Fish like swimming through the leaves and some like hiding behind them. I usually have ambient light in my room but I have noticed that the leaves which dont receive a lot of light will turn brown, so it's better to give this plant more light than less.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good plants Have had these plants for a week and a half. So far so good. My only complaint is that the plastic tube the plants came in stated there were 2-4 plants per tube. The 2 tubes I bought only contained 1 plant each.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good quality but still costs way too much I love this plant, but in the package it says 2-4... It's only one. I bought 2 packs thinking that would be enough for my planted aquarium... No way. The leaves that it had on it began to die, but eventually it shot up new growth. I would recommend because this helps improve your water quality and it grows tall. Fish will not eat it, and snails will not eat it. Snails will climb on it and eat algae off of it. Needs sunlight for fast growth. Take caution with goldfish! My Ryukin goldfish I have in the 30 gallon tried to uproot it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Baby fry love this! My molly just gave birth to tons of fry so I was looking for a plant that would be safe for my fry to hide in, and sure enough when I put it in my tank they all hid in there. So cute!
