National Geographic™ Aquarium Substrate is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from It's ok When I first washed this some of the substrate floated and I had to keep pushing it down to the bottom of the wash bucket. Some of the edges are a little too pointy for my taste. I prefer something more uniform. After a few months I upgraded and moved this into another tank and noticed it's white inside. For a better example, what I saw was more like old epoxy gravel that lost it's color. It looks like white plastic coated with black epoxy. Cleaning this substrate is easier than the heavy gravel. My live plants don't root well in this as I don't think it is heavy enough to hold them down. It did not alter my water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great substrate- clean, easy to rinse, great color I purchased 3 x 25 pound bags for my 55 gal tank- more than enough, ended up removing some, but I like to have a good base. Not sure why the variability in experience with this product, but maybe it has been improved since older posts. I love the size, color and texture of this sand. It was unbelievably easy to rinse- I filled a 5 gal bucket about 1/2 to 3/4 full and rinsed until clear, which didn't take long- very little dust, a few floaters, that when tapped, settled nicely. I'll try to upload the initial set up during fill, once done, one day later, and 1 week later. I did let tank set for several hrs after initial 1/3 or so fill to check for leaks. Added all substrate before adding water. Did not run filters until completely full and settled. My Parrots are still in the shy hiding stage unfortunately haha. The orig final two images came thru with just a touch of haze- they are much clearer. I love when customers post pics, so hope it helps. The black color does show detritus a little more, but does make the fish colors pop and can help calm skittish fish without all the light bouncing off lighter colored substrates. The difference in pH is interesting with other customers- my tap pH runs alkaline, but after 1 week, it is 7.0 on the money. I run double canister filtration. I did my first siphon clean and was pleased with the weight of the sand- can either hover or pick up and it falls right back down- had a few specks in the siphoned water- my first experience with sand, so my technique will get better. I studied and fretted for weeks for which sand substrate to get, but am very pleased with this one- reasonable price, shipped with no broken bags.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not for planted aquarium It is not meant for any plants in the aquarium. If you only need it for decor, it will be working good. But if you are looking for a rich substrate, don't go for this one. I'm ready to replace mine with another brand of rich substrate because I keep real plants in my tank.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Substrate Is Great I have this in 3 tanks, and it's been working well for all of my bettas and goldfish. It stays clean and looks good. It's not dusty like most sandy substrates, and settles well. Before I put it in, I rinsed it off to clean it but there was no need. I especially like this for my goldfish, who eat food off the bottom, the sand settles after they move it around and it they haven't had any problems ingesting it. The black color is very cool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great coloring I recently bought a 20 gallon tank and decided to use this type of gravel. It was a great choice because it brings out the colors in the fish as well as decor. I had no problem at all when putting it through the water and getting it clean.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Substrate I recently added a 5.5 gallon aquarium to my classroom. I haven't managed an aquarium in years, so I had to re-learn quite a bit. I used this brand of substrate, and it has been wonderful for my little project. I placed live plants in the aquarium, and they are growing exponentially! It is easy to clean with the gravel siphon; sometimes the siphon will suck a lot of the substrate, but the substrate does not filter through the suction. This substrate is very natural looking. My aquarium is almost euphoric; it looks so natural and beautiful!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This is painted bits of metal and plastic. This is not gravel or sand. When I washed it at home, bits started floating to the top and upon closer inspection I realized the bits were flecks of paint and that the "gravel" they came off of were actually sharp bits of metal and plastic. Returned to the store promptly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Quality Great coloring throughout and NOT so light that it gets sucked up into a siphon.

Is this ok to use in turtle tanks

Asked by: Lillianamaya

People with pH issues, did you eventually get it under control? I've been adding pH down like crazy (I don't have fish transferred into the new tank yet because it's too high) and I haven't been able to knock it down even a bit.
