About this item

Description:Conures are a variety of parrot that come in all sizes and colors. These curious birds are native to South America and are known to be inquisitive and quite bold compared to some other birds. Conures are sometimes referred to as
"clowns of the bird world" due to their playful personalities! They generally love to be around people, often even climbing into their owner's shirt for a cuddle, and they're so smart that some individuals can even be taught tricks!

Species: Fancy Conure

Normal Pet Size at Maturity: Conures can range in size depending on the variety. Green-cheek conures average around 10", whereas Sun conures average around 15" (38 cm) from head to end of tail.

Average Lifespan: Conures can live as long as 20 years.

Basic Diet: For detailed feeding information, check out the care & feeding section of the Conure care guide! Conure main source of nutrients is provided from a pellet-seed blend. Remove old food left in the dish, and replace with new fresh pellets daily. Keep your Conure diet bowl three-quarters full. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and grains every other day are a good way to add variation to your Conure diet. To keep your Conure in the best shape, refrain from feeding your bird nuts, seed, millet sticks, and other treats more than twice a month. Never feed your bird chocolate, sugar, fried foods, avocado, or human junk food. These foods can make your bird very sick.

Habitat Necessities: for full
details, visit our setting up a conure habitat section on the Conure care guide page. Place the enclosure in a room with regular human activity so your conure feels part of the
"flock" Keep the cage at or below eye level, away from: Kitchens and cooking fumes (especially non-stick cookware) Strong odors and smoke Drafts, windows, and direct sunlight Cover the cage at night to help your bird feel safe and secure Provide at least three toys to encourage exercise and mental stimulation Place a cuttlebone in the enclosure to support beak and bone health Add a T-stand or playpen so your bird can safely play outside the cage (indoors only) Include multiple perches of varying thickness and height for healthy foot movement Use a liner at the bottom of the enclosure and replace as needed to maintain cleanliness. Offer a birdbath or shallow dish for splashing and bathing 2-3 times a week. or, gently mist your bird with warm water 2-3 times a week Fresh water for drinking in a bowl or bird water bottle at all times

Does this Pet Need a Roommate? Conures are social and full of personality. They are flock-oriented birds, and typically do well with other birds in the home. However, they consider their humans to be equally part of the flock and will happily spend their days as an only bird-child with you.

Minimum Enclosure Size: The minimum enclosure size is 20"x20"x30", but it's recommended to have an enclosure 32"x23"x36" or larger, especially if housing more than one bird.

Safety Tips for You and Your Pet: It is recommended to closely monitor any new pet for 30 days in their own enclosure to observe signs of illness, prevent the spread of potential diseases, and to limit stress while your pet acclimates to their new home. All new pets should be seen by a veterinarian within 14 days of purchase to establish care and discuss a health and wellness plan. All animals can potentially carry viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic diseases contagious to humans. Thoroughly wash your hands with warm, soapy water before and after contact with any pet or its habitat. Adults should assist children with hand washing after contact with a pet or its enclosure. Use caution when handling pets, and remember they may bite or scratch, especially when stressed.

"find a vet" on AAV.org for help finding an avian veterinarian in your area.
