product highlights

The Pawz Away Mini Pet Barrier creates avoidance areas up to 5 feet in diameter. It teaches your pets to avoid areas inside your home and outside in your yard. The waterproof and battery operated Mini Pet Barrier fits easily in small spaces. It will keep your pet off kitchen counters, away from the trash, and off your furniture. The Transmitter sends an elliptical radio signal. Your pet wears a Receiver Collar with Contact Points that touch his neck. When your pet enters the Barrier Area, he'll hear a series of beeps from the collar followed by a safe, progressive Static Correction. It is designed to startle. This method has been proven safe, and will not harm your pet. Your pet will quickly learn to avoid the Barriers you have set up. There are distinct settings for multiple pets. Easy set-up and training for dogs and cats weighing 5 pounds and up. An unlimited number of pets can be added to the system as long as they are wearing a PetSafe Pawz Away or YardMax Receiver Collar.

Features: Creates avoidance areas up to 5 feet
Includes:

  • Barrier Transmitter (3 alkaline AAA batteries required, not included)
  • Receiver Collar with (2) 3-volt lithium batteries
  • Test Light Tool
  • Cat collar strap
  • Operating and Training Guide
    Dimensions: Receiver Collar 2.19" L x 1.20" W x 1.28" H, .11 lbs., Barrier Transmitter: 2.99" L x 2.99" W x 1.01" H, .18 lbs.
Cleaning Instructions: Nylon receiver collar strap may be washed. Plastic Receiver Collar and Barrier Transmitter housings may be cleaned with a damp cloth.
Caution: Not for use with aggressive dogs. Do not use this product if your dog is prone to aggressive behavior. Caution: This system is not a solid barrier. Not all pets can be trained to avoid the Barrier Area. For pets 6 months or older or once they can learn basic obedience commands like "sit" and "stay". A collar worn for too long or made too tight on the pet's neck may cause skin damage. Ranging from redness to pressure ulcers; this condition is commonly known as bed sores. Avoid leaving the collar on the pet for more than 12 hours per day.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not effective The only thing this did was irritate my dog I bought this to keep my dog away from the Christmas tree that we put up right in front of the bay window in the livingroom. While no one was home, she would always undress the bottom half of the tree while trying to squeeze through to the bay window (she knew better than to access it while I was home because such an action would immediately be corrected.) So I bought this, hoping it would keep her away from the tree while I was gone. It had minimal effect while the transmitter was still set up (I made my judgement based on how undressed the tree was compared to usual). And eventually my dog got irritated and took it upon herself to get rid of the transmitter. So what are the problems with this thing? Firstly, the barrier does technically cover a 5ft diameter, but that claim is somewhat misleading. The signal only extends up to 2.5ft in either direction from the transmitter (that's a 2.5ft radius). Such a short signal is not enough to keep pets away from large objects, like trashcans, furniture, etc. And because the signal is transmitted in an elliptical shape, not a circular shape, some areas have an even shorter signal radius. So the "5ft" claim sounds like a lot, but it's not. It allows pets to get too close to the object you are trying to keep them away from before they even receive the audible warning signal or the subsequent shock signal. Second issue is that the shock signal automatically shuts off after 15 seconds for safety reasons. Any smart dog will figure out how to stick around until the signal stops... I didn't test the strength of the shock signal out myself, so I don't know how strong it is. Maybe it's not strong enough. What I do know, however, is that this system irriated my dog off so much that she "disposed" of the transmitter while I was not at home. I searched all the areas in the house that she has access to from top to bottom: under furniture, between couch cushions, in corners, in trashcans, anywhere and EVERYWHERE. I cannot find the freakin transmitter anywhere. She did something to it and I don't know what. She's smart, but she's not a genius, so I didn't expect her to go to these lengths. But she did, and now I'm out $60 and left scratching my head wondering...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! I am a professional dog trainer, and recently worked with a dog that had terrible barrier frustration and would work at getting out of a crate to the point of injury. Once out, he headed straight to the kitchen, where he would open cabinets and make a terrible mess. He lost his home due to this problem, and rehoming him was going to be a major challenge! I decided to try the wireless indoor fence - it worked instantly, and keeps him completely out of the kitchen! He now quietly spends his days lounging comfortably in the living room and doesn't need to be crated when no one is home. Just remember to put his collar on, and set the disc on the floor and he is the perfect dog. Thanks to this product, we have been able to find a new home for him, and know that he will be able to safely be left home alone and won't bounce back into the system!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't work on cat Tested it on myself, and it works. However, the cat feels no stimulus at all. I tightened the collar, doesn't work. I even shaved the cat's neck, as per the product's instructions, and it still doesn't work. PetSmart won't refund it because it cost over $10, and PetSafe won't refund it either. Now I'm $60 in the hole, and my cat has a bald spot.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your $$$$ this product states "up to 5 ft" for the correction signal. It maybe got 2-3 ft correction signal and I’m being generous. Not worth the time or money

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent product This item kept me from having to give up my pet. This keeps him out of the living room. We had recently redecorated and reupholstered furniture. My male Chihuahua had spent 2 weeks at doggie boot camp but still peed and pooped in the living room. This was the last resort and it saved his life. Excellent product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don’t be hesitant. I know correction collars are controversial, but knowing that PetSafe invented both the static mat and the compressed air Sccat, I know that the company makes pet safe items that offer simple correction that isn’t harmful to willful cats. My slightly petulant cat respects the boundaries the collar creates, but it isn’t abusing her. Buy with confidence. The rep even recommended vasiline as a way to get through thick fur. My cords are safe and my cat still loves me. A great system all around for those few areas you’d like cats to avoid. I own three of petsafe’s products. None are cruel, but all are respected. They’re pet forward, don’t worry that your beloved pet may be harmed. An amazing and inovated company. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 5 feet Try more like 15 inches The reason that I bought this was for my cat that like to escape out the dog door. I thought it would be perfect it should give a barrier of five feet. So I read the instructions to make sure that I had it set properly. And mind you I have bought PetSafe products before and have other products of theirs now and love them. I thought it was kind of strange that the manual that came with it had inches listed not feet but I thought that might be a typo, cause it does happen. I was wrong my cat can get within 15 inches of the dog door and then will bolt for it so he can get past the static correction. Now I am on the hunt for something that will work like I was expecting this to work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great I used this for my Lab that would get in the trash when I was at work. It worked great, found out that it works on a single plane. If what you want to keep them off of, like counter, it will not get them till they are on the same plane. Like when there head brakes the edge of counter.

I am researching these devices since my Schnauzer mix continues to get into the trash. I have a follow-up question to one asked by ccont. Why must I "ensure that it is not on your pet for more than 10-12 hours at a time"? Thank you for your time!

    Asked by: hotspringsschnauzer
Thank you for your question! We highly recommend that pets not wear the receiver collars more than 10-12 hours per day because, over time, it is possible for the strap and prongs on the collar to cause skin irritation. This is not due to any flaw in the design of the collars, and is unrelated to the static correction features of the collars, but is the same as recommending that a person not wear a tight watch all day long. Too much friction over a long period of time will inevitably cause some form of skin irritation, which can lead to the equivalent of bedsores, which, if untreated, could lead to more serious skin conditions or infection.
