It looked sturdy in the photos, but alas i was mistaken. The electronics failed after 1 year. The door is held to the lift mechanism by a very flimsy piece of plastic that has snapped after only 2 years. It's -12 out tonight so i had to fix this or freeze. I had to decide whether to repair this or re-buy the same one as I now have a very unique shaped hole in my basement door. I've included the repair shots. doesn't look pretty, but thanks to some plumbers tape, plastic and duct tape, it now works again. maybe try buying a different door for your pet and skip this one.
Date published: 2018-02-21

Rated 5 out of 5 by mbbmfoster from LOVE IT!! We live out in the country and have cats. We have lost 2 to coyote's/fox because they learned how to get out of the normal dog door. We searched "high and low" because we have big dogs and had a hard time finding a locking dog door big enough. We love this door and have owned it for 4 years now with out any problems. The dogs are free to go in and out as they please and we haven't lost any more cats! Also, we foster for our local humane society, and it has been easy to train other dogs how to use this quickly.
Date published: 2013-01-27

Rated 1 out of 5 by Shawnie from Petsafe Electronic Dog Door Installation on a wood door would have been easier, but we have a metal door so installation was difficult. Once we had it on it, programed the collar, the unit jammed in the lock position and we, the 800 service people and I, could not get it to release. I had to return the product and re-install. The unit continues to jam and I am constantly having to take batteries out and clear the memory which takes quite a while. I am extremely unhappy with this and plan to return the thing and buy a defferent door.
Date published: 2008-09-20

Rated 1 out of 5 by Hendrik from No GOOD door I have only had this door in for about 6 months now and gone through 3 sets of Duracell batteries. This door sometimes does not close properly - in its tracks and then it gets stuck - resulting in the dog not being able to come in or go out! It also opens and closes on its own, NON-STOP. I think this is the biggest piece of "ureliable junk" on the market!!! This is not a door you can install and leave your home thinking your pet will be OK. You will leave and be worried ALL the time - and the chances of it malfunctioning while you are away, is about 90%.
Date published: 2009-02-02

Rated 1 out of 5 by Pony from Strong, but has problems We have 4 large dogs, so this product seemed a great way to give them independence, and save the trips to the door to let them out. Although this product is electronic, we did not buy it for this reason. It was the only large pet door that had a rigid plastic door, we had tried the flexible plastic ones before and they frequently stick open. Installation is fairly demanding. The hole needs to be much larger than the opening in the pet door - the top portion of the frame contains the electronics, and this is housed inside the newly cut hole in your door. The manufacturer provides a paper template, but it is going to take two of you to position the template and tape it in place (unless your happy with a slanted pet door). Installation took about 1 hour, using a jigsaw and a philips screwdriver. As I stated earlier we did not buy this for its electronic opening feature (besides each additional pet tag costs around $30). The door can be set to "locked", "unlocked" or "automatic", the latter meaning it unlocks when one of your pets is wearing a tag and approaches the door. We set the door to unlocked. Sadly in unlocked mode the door has a 2 or 3 mm gap all the way around, which lets in the outside air. The door also has a tendency to stick when it swings closed, leaving a 2 inch gap! In automatic mode the door locking mechanism then jams. I'm going to take my dremmel and remove a few mm's from the area where the door sticks - but you shouldn't have to do this with a $200 pet door. The door is made of durable plastic and looks like it would last - sadly poor quality control means it sticks.
Date published: 2008-12-07

Rated 1 out of 5 by Cassie11 from This is my second door in the last 6 months! I have two dogs who love to come in and go out as they please. The only problem is that the manufacture won't change the design to fix the breakage problem. The hinge at the top is made of plastic. The dog go through the door and the hinge eventually breaks. Our lab is almost 13 so he needs to go out frequently, we can not leave the door shut at night. After a week of getting up twice a night to let the dog out, we found this door and we were very excited, we thought this was the perfect solution (wish I would have went online and read reviews before I purchased in the store). The door was very unreliable. It would lock and unlock without reason. Also there is a limited amount of time the dog has to enter the door when he comes into range. If he does not go through, then the door locks. The dog would have to leave the range for a period of time before the door would unlock. This just confused our dog and we could not trust it. We couldn’t even use it one day. The worst part is we bought a new screen door and custom cut the hole to fit this door. We had to take the batteries out to try to use as a traditional flap, but the wind blows it open and cold air rushes in. Now we have a very expensive piece of junk and still get up twice a night. We are now looking for a flap that will fit this hole and just pray the raccoon does not come back
Date published: 2009-02-19

PetSafe® Electronic SmartDoor™ Pet Door Reviews - page 2

y_2019, m_11, d_10, h_20

bvseo_bulk, prod_bvrr, vn_bulk_3.0.0

cp_1, bvpage1

co_hasreviews, tv_0, tr_73

loc_en_US, sid_6595, prod, sort_[SortEntry(order=HELPFULNESS, direction=DESCENDING), SortEntry(order=POSITIVE_FEEDBACK, direction=DESCENDING), SortEntry(order=SUBMISSION_TIME, direction=DESCENDING)]

clientName_petsmart

bvseo_sdk, dw_cartridge, 18.2.0, p_sdk_3.2.0

CLOUD, getReviews, 40ms

reviews, product
