Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very beautiful fish I have a 29 gallon tank set up for just African cichlids. I have two Auratus (1 male 1 female) three of these Julies, an electric yellow and a red zebra. Although they say that Julies are very agressive, if you purchase a few (like I did) they tend to school and keep from being very agressive. My red zebra and my femal Auratus are agressive and tend to nip fins. My female Auratus is super aggressive right now because she's holding eggs though. I've had no problems out of my three, they tend to be able to out run the bigger cichlids I have. Don't forget to have plenty of hiding places for your cichlids. They do become aggressive over their territories so the more you have the better!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this fish I just bought a Jewel home yesterday and love it. so far she seems to hold her ground with her bully convict and will fight back, but would prefer to swim away when possible. Great eater, and very active. I think I will add another Jewel to the tank to help keep the attention off of the previous one. I had a few fish who didnt hold up to the convict, so this was trial and error and looks good so far

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Real Jewel... I have a Jewel, and unlike others, he is really shy, but is territorial on his side of the tank. He hides all the time, but is a nice fish. He is only a few inches big, but he is getting bigger. He is housed in a 20 gallon with another African Cichlid, but they get along real fine. I would recommend this fish to a person with an open heart.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from From 2, I got hundreds.... This past spring, I purchased two of these little fish -- each from a different PetsMart store. Lucky me, I happened to choose a male and a female (unknowingly, and totally accidentally)! These two little fish that I paid not more than $6 total for have resulted in hundreds of offspring and my spending hundreds of dollars more at PetsMart! They have cost me a small fortune! Shortly after arriving, they started reproducing. I now have dozens of jewel cichlids among three tanks in over 100 gallons of water. I had to fire up two other tanks that I had in storage because I ran out of space. What's worse is that the original two are now grandparents, many times over. Seriously, I've never met such a hardy -- and fertile-- fish. They are absolutely beautiful (the photo above does not do it justice) and they have personalities similar to convicts. I'm not perfect when it comes to water conditions and these fish don't care. I have not lost one to illness or disease. They'll eat almost anything as well. They can be very territorial when mating or protecting fry, and that could be a problem. True to cichlid character, they are naturally aggressive. Do not put them with community fish or fish smaller than them; they'll eat them! We have enjoyed watching the reproductive process with these fish; it is very exciting for children, and that's why I have allowed it to continue to a degree. (I have used most of the fry as feeder fish. Otherwise, I'd literally have over a thousand fish!) Of course, if you -- like I -- suddenly have problems in the tank because you've found yourself with a mated pair, you'll need to find another tank......next thing you know, you'll be dropping several hundred dollars more at PetsMart, like I did! I give jewel cichlids a 5-star rating due to their hardiness and personality. I would only recommend them to a friend who already has cichlids in their tank; otherwise, there will be a bullying problem. Good luck with yours, and enjoy!
