How to Layer Your Substrate:
LAVA ROCK:
The foundation of your habitat&339;s bioactive setup, lava rock is a helpful drainage layer because it:

Catches excess water that flows through the soil.

Prevents soil from becoming oversaturated which could compromise the growth of healthy microfauna and destabilize the humidity in the terrarium.

This layer should have a depth of around 2 inches.

FILTER FABRIC:
This non-toxic fine screen mesh creates a barrier between the drainage layer and the soil. It is a vital component of the bioactive terrarium because it:

Allows ventilation without letting soil through

Keeps the soil from soaking up too much water

BIOACTIVE SOIL:
