DESCRIPTION:

Lutalyse is used for parturition induction of swine, and it is a luteolytic agent in cattle and mares.

    What Results Can I Expect? Lutalyse is luteolytic on mares and cattle, and it is used in swine to induce parturition.

    What Form Does Medication Come In? Injectable

    Dose and Administration: Each vial contains 30 mL or 100 mL.

    Possible Side Effects: Potential adverse reactions include:
    In cattle: Decreased salivation

    In swine:

  • Erythema
  • Pruritus
  • Slight incoordination
  • Nesting behaviors
  • Itching
  • Urination
  • Defecation
  • Abdominal muscle spasm
  • Tail movement
  • Hyperpnea
  • Dyspnea
  • Increase in vocalization
  • Salivation
  • Vomiting (at 100 mg dosage rate)

    These side effects are usually transient, lasting between 10 minutes and 3 hours, and are not harmful. In mares: The following reactions may occur within 15 minutes of administration and disappear within one hour. Even in these cases, the mare will likely eat:

  • Elevated heart rate
  • Elevated respiratory rate
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Locomotor incoordination
  • Lying down

    Other potential transient, non-severe side effects include:

  • Sweating
  • Decreased rectal temperature
    A study of hundreds of treated horses reported one unsubstantiated case of anaphylactic reaction.

  • Wash any accidental spillage off of the skin with soap and water.
  • Use great caution when handling this product if you are a woman of childbearing age, asthmatic, or have bronchial or respiratory problems. Women may be unaware of pregnancy in early stages. Because this drug is readily and easily absorbed through the skin, abortion and/or bronchospasm can occur.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Not for human use.
  • There is no requirement for milk discard or pre-slaughter in cattle.
  • Withdrawal is not needed before swine slaughter.
  • When given in a larger dose than recommended, drug residues are possible.
  • Do not administer to an animal intended for food use.
  • Serious localized clostridial infections are possible, which can cause death.
  • When administered prior to day 5 after mare ovulation, this injection will not be effective.
  • Do not give to a sow or gilt prior to 3 days of expected farrowing. Increased stillbirth and postnatal mortality rates are possible.
  • Cattle treated with progestin may not respond optimally to this product.
  • Do not administer to a pregnant cow unless abortion is the desired result.
  • Concomitant use of NSAIDs can inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. Therefore, this product should not be administered concomitantly with another NSAID.
  • Do not deliver intravenously.
  • In case of an infection at the injection site (whether localized or diffuse), aggressive treatment should be employed using antibiotics.
  • Do not administer to. mares with acute or subacute vascular system, gastrointestinal tract, respiratory system, or reproductive tract disorders.
  • Determine pregnancy status of mares before injection. This drug can cause abortion or induce parturition.

    Storage Recommendations: Keep in a cool and dry location between 20 to 25 degrees C (68 to 77 degrees F)
