Description: Spironolactone is an aldosterone antagonist and potassium–sparing diuretic, most often used to help treat congestive heart failure in animals. Often used in combination with other medications to treat cardiovascular conditions, including congestive heart failure, in dogs and cats. Can also be used to treat other conditions, including high blood pressure and certain types of fluid retention. Do not use this medication in pregnant animals or those with serious electrolyte imbalances (e.g., hyperkalemia), acute kidney injury, severe kidney impairment⁄disease, or that are not urinating (anuric). May be prescribed for other animal species; please consult your veterinarian. While this drug does not have an FDA–approved indication for all animal uses, it is commonly accepted for veterinarians to prescribe this medication for use in animals.
