Description: Allopurinol is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor used to help prevent certain types of kidney and bladder stones. This medication may also be used to treat gout or certain parasitic infections in animals. Used to reduce uric acid production in dogs, which helps to treat and prevent the formation of certain types of kidney and urinary bladder stones. Can also be used to treat certain parasitic infections (e.g., leishmaniasis) in dogs and cats, as well as gout in birds and reptiles. Do not use in red–tailed hawks; use with caution (or avoid use) in other raptors. May be prescribed for other animal species; please consult your veterinarian.
