    DESCRIPTION

    Megestrol Acetate is a synthetic, prescription-only medication that is much like the natural progesterone hormone of a female dog. This hormone is responsible for regulating the heat cycle and relieving false pregnancies.

    Dose and Administration: Tablets are sold individually in 20 or 40 mg strengths.

    Possible Side Effects: If you observe any of the following adverse reactions, withdraw use and pursue emergency treatment:

  • Leg swelling
  • Vision changes
  • Sudden serious headache
  • Allergic reaction (signs include hives, trouble breathing, or swollen face, tongue, or lips)

    Other non-severe reactions are possible. If you observe any of the following side effects, or any other bothersome or unusual effects, consult your veterinarian:

  • Insomnia
  • Sweating
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Headache
  • Weakness
  • Mild shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea

    Precautions:

  • If your pet is being treated with insulin, consult your vet before administering Megestrol. This medication can decrease insulin's effect, and a blood sugar increase can occur.
  • Let your pet drink lots of water during Megestrol treatment.
  • Only intended for use in female dogs.
  • Do not administer to a pregnant dog, or to a dog during or before their first estrus cycle.
  • Never administer to a cat.
  • Keep out of reach of animals and children.

    Storage Recommendations: Store in a cool and dry environment between temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees C (68 to 77 degrees F).

    In Case of Overdose: Call your nearest emergency pet hospital.
