    DESCRIPTION:

    Lactulose Solution is effective in the colon. It softens the stool with its laxative effect, which relieves constipation. It is also often used for the treatment of liver disease or hepatic encephalopathy.

  • Lactulose contains Fructose and Galactose, two synthetic sugars.
  • Together, the sugars make their way through the digestive tract without being absorbed.
  • Bacteria then work to break them down, creating an acidic intestinal environment.
  • The stool is softened when the intestinal acids pull water into the colon.
  • Those acids also convert ammonia in the colon into ammonium, which is eliminated in the stool.

    How is Medication Given?

  • For cats or dogs, administer 2 mL for every 2 pounds of pet's body weight at 8-hour initial intervals, reducing to an as-needed basis.
  • If your pet develops excessive diarrhea, consult a veterinarian.
