DESCRIPTION: HEARTGARD Plus contains Pyrantel and Ivermectin to kill heartworms and control and treat hookworms. This once-monthly chew protects your dog against heartworm disease, a potentially fatal illness. Infected mosquitoes bite dogs, causing lasting damage as quickly as 3 months later. Year-round heartworm prevention is important because mosquitoes can bite during any season. Prior to treatment, dogs should receive a negative heartworm test. This product is safe for dogs over 6 weeks old, and the American Heartworm Society recommends year-round dosing. Be sure to tell your vet about the other medications your dog is taking.
Key Benefits: Heartgard combines 2 different active ingredients to control and treat roundworms and hookworms and to prevent heartworm disease.
Formulated For: For dogs and puppies 6 weeks or older.
How is Medication Given?
Only remove a single chewable from the foil blister at a time. Place the rest of the chewables back in the box to store out of light. Offer by hand or combine with a small portion of food. Administer in the way that encourages your dog to chew instead of swallow. If your dog typically swallows medication or treats whole, break into pieces. Ensure that your dog consumes the full dose, then observe afterward to be sure none is rejected or lost. If any portion of the dose is lost, re-dose. Administer monthly, particularly during mosquito season. Administer within 30 days of the dog's first mosquito exposure of the season, and administer the last dose within 30 days of the last mosquito exposure. Take measures to prevent intestinal parasite re-infection. Monthly HEARTGARD Plus treatment also controls and treats hookworms (A. braziliense, U. stenocephala, and A. caninum) and ascarids (T. leonina and T. canis). To switch from another heartworm preventative to HEARTGARD Plus, administer this medication within 30 days of the final dose of your dog's old preventative. If your dog goes more than 30 days without heartworm prevention, the efficacy of the ingredient Ivermectin may be lower. For this reason, this medication should be administered monthly on the same day each month. If your dog's treatment is delayed by a few or several days, treat immediately and resume the recommended schedule to mitigate potential adult heartworm development.
What Results Can I Expect? Heartgard is the top veterinarian-recommended option for heartworm prevention. It comes in a tasty, beef-flavored chew, it's easy to administer monthly, it controls and treats hookworms and roundworms, and it can be given to puppies as young as 6 weeks old.
