About this item
DESCRIPTION:

PREVICOX is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) prescribed to control the inflammation and pain associated with canine OA (osteoarthritis). The chewable tablets can be administered to control pain after operations and the inflammation associated with orthopedic or soft tissue surgical procedures. Veterinarians might administer this medication prior to procedures and prescribe treatment for pain after returning home. This drug is available in a chewable, barbeque-flavored tablet for easy administration. When administered daily to relieve osteoarthritis pain, dogs typically enjoy symptom improvement in a matter of days. Consult your veterinarian about PREVICOX to help your dog enjoy a happy, pain-free life.

Key Benefits: Previcox blocks cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme, which produces chemicals that can cause fever, pain, and inflammation in the body.

Formulated For: For dogs only.

How is Medication Given?

  • Administer without or with food.
  • These scored tablets should be dosed to the nearest half-tablet increment.
  • Treat dogs about 2 hours before surgery.
  • Recommended oral dosage rate is 2.27 mg per pound of body weight administered one time each day as required to treat osteoarthritis, and for a 3-day period, as required, to treat the inflammation and pain caused by orthopedic or soft tissue surgery procedures.
  • Prescribed dosage rate will vary, depending on your veterinarian's evaluation of your pet's condition and his or her body weight.
  • The risks and benefits of Previcox use, as well as other treatments, should be carefully weighed before beginning treatment.
  • The lowest possible dose should be administered for the shortest possible duration to achieve the desired response.

What Results Can I Expect? Previcox improves lameness within just 3 hours of administration. 7 hours later, dogs experience close-to-normal function.

What FormDoes Medication Come In? Chewable Tablet

Dose and Administration: Sold individually or in 10-count, 30-count, 60-count, or 180-count bottles in 57 mg or 227 mg strengths.

Possible Side Effects: The most common side effects associated with Previcox use are digestive tract-related. They include vomiting or decreased appetite. NSAID use can also cause liver or kidney problems. Consult your veterinarian if you believe your pet is experiencing a side effect.

    Precautions

  • Safety is not proven for use in breeding, lactating, or pregnant dogs.
  • Parenteral fluid use in surgery may decrease the likelihood of a renal complication when NSAIDs are perioperatively administered.
  • Anesthesia can have an effect on renal perfusion, so concomitant NSAID and anesthetic use should be cautiously approached.
  • If the animal needs more pain medication in addition to the daily PREVICOX dose, an analgesic from a different (non-NSAID) drug class might be required.
  • Monitoring is important during any surgery, as well as for patients taking any adjunctive therapy (to ensure compatibility).
  • Concomitant drug use and its influence on PREVICOX metabolism has never been studied. This includes protein-bound drugs, which are common among behavioral, anticonvulsant, and cardiac drugs.
  • Because NSAIDs can cause gastrointestinal perforation and/or gastrointestinal ulcers, concomitant use of any other corticosteroid or NSAID must be prevented.
  • Carefully approach and monitor concomitant use of potentially nephrotoxic drugs. NSAIDs can inhibit homeostatic function-maintaining prostaglandins, causing severe disease in animals with undiagnosed pre-existing or underlying disease.
  • Proper washout times should be considered if you are switching the animal from one NSAID to another or from corticosteroid to NSAID treatment. Cyclooxygenase-inhibiting NSAIDs can cause hepatic, gastrointestinal, and renal toxicity.
  • Adverse reaction sensitivityvaries from one patient to the next. Dogs with previous adverse reactions to another NSAID could experience the same reaction with any other NSAID. Those at the highest risk for an adverse reaction are animals with hepatic dysfunction, cardiovascular dysfunction, renal dysfunction, those taking diuretics, or those who are dehydrated.
  • Keep out of reach of animals and children.

Storage Recommendations: Store in a cool, dry place between 15 degrees C and 30 degrees C (59 degrees F and 86 degrees F) Brief excursions of up to 40 degrees C (104 degrees F) are permitted.

In Case of Overdose: Contact the nearest emergency pet clinic immediately.
