How is Medication Given?
This drug is intended as a lifelong treatment. Without it, the animal's symptoms will resume. Blood testing should be repeated at 3- to 4-week intervals until an appropriate maintenance dosage is determined. Thereafter, blood testing should take place every 3 to 6 months. Typical recommended dosage rate for cats is 5 mg every 8 to 12 hours. This drugs is not approved by the FDA for animal use, but it is frequently prescribed by veterinarians for use in cats.

Possible Side Effects: Most side effects related to Methimazole use are seen within the first few months of treatment, and they are typically reduced by beginning with a lower dose and gradually increasing the dose over a few months. If you observe any of the following side effects in your cat, or if you observe any other signs, consult your veterinarian:
Liver problems (indicated by facial itch and subsequent scratching and/or bleeding, dark urine, yellow gums, yellow skin, yellow eyes, lethargy, decreased appetite, or vomiting) Decreased appetite Vomiting Lethargy Undiagnosed kidney disease signs Myasthenia gravis (severe muscle weakness or difficult swallowing), in rare cases Drowsiness Fever of 103 degrees F or more Bruising Bleeding
Precautions: If you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are nursing, handle these tablets and the litter or bodily fluids of treated cats with gloves only.
Storage Recommendations: Do not expose to light or heat, keep at room temperatures and in a container with a tight lid.
