DESCRIPTION:

Atenolol is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is also prescribed to slow or regulate certain tachycardia conditions (rapid and abnormal heart rate) or chest pains associated with coronary artery disease.

What Form Does Medication Come In? Tablet

Dose and Administration: Tablets are sold individually in strengths of 25 mg or 50 mg.

Possible Side Effects: The most common side effects include:

  • Slow heart rate
  • Low blood pressure
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea

    Other side effects are also possible, but unlikely. In rare cases, allergic reactions have been reported, involving signs like rash, trouble breathing, or swelling. If you observe these or any other signs of a reaction, consult your vet at once.

    Precautions: Administer cautiously to pets with:

  • Severe kidney disease
  • Diabetes
  • Asthma
  • Heart conditions
  • Gastrointestinal ulcers

    Never administer to:

  • Pets with prior hypersensitivity to this or any other drug in the same class
  • Pets diagnosed with heart failure
  • Pets with a heart block considered more significant than 1st degree
  • Pets with a low heart rate
  • Pets with a bronchospastic lung disease diagnosis
  • Cats suffering from HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy)-related left-sided heart failure
  • A pregnant or lactating animal (unless the risks and benefits have been carefully weighed by the veterinarian)

    Dogs who have specific ADRB1 genes might be especially sensitive to the effects of this drug.

    Storage Recommendations: Store in a cool and dry location.

    In Case of Overdose: Contact the nearest emergency pet clinic immediately.
