Amlodipine Besylate is a calcium channel-blocking medication. Calcium is responsible for blood vessel contraction. By blocking calcium, Amlodipine relaxes and widens the vessels. It also treats high blood pressure and angina (chest pain).

Dose and Administration: Tablets are sold individually in strengths of 2.5, 5, and 10 mg.

Possible Side Effects: In cats, the following side effects were rarely reported:

  • Elevated renal blood parameters
  • Blood potassium level drops
  • Lethargy
  • Increased heart rate
  • Weight loss In dogs, 8.5% experienced gingival hyperplasia, a condition that causes gum overgrowth and subsequent periodontal bacterial infection. This condition resolves within 6 months of drug withdrawal.

    Precautions:

  • Overdose can cause profound hypotension and bradycardia. If these effects are recognized promptly, gut emptying is indicated.
  • This medication is known to depress conduction velocity and impulse formation in the cardiac muscle (negative inotropic). It should be used cautiously in animals with heart failure or cardiac shock.
  • Follow your veterinarian's exact administration directions.
  • Never administer to a breeding pet.
  • Never administer to a pregnant or lactating female.
  • Never administer to an animal with liver disease.
