    Usage: Ketoconazole should be given orally as directed by your veterinarian. Give with food, especially foods high in fat. Routine laboratory testing is recommended if on this medication long–term.

    Missed Doses: Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.

    Side Effects: Common potential side effects may include loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea. If these and⁄or other symptoms persist, contact your veterinarian. Reversible lightening of the haircoat may occur, though this is uncommon. Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.

    Drug & Food Interactions: The following medications are noted to have potential drug interactions with ketoconazole (but is not a comprehensive list): antacids, amitriptyline, clomipramine, benzodiazepines, buspirone, calcium channel blockers, corticosteroids, cyclosporine, digoxin, estriol, fluoxetine, famotidine, ivermectin, maropitant, metronidazole, mirtazapine, omeprazole, ondansetron, phenobarbital, praziquantel, ranitidine, sildenafil, sotalol, sucralfate, tramadol, trazodone, and warfarin. The following medications should not be given with ketoconazole: astemizole, cisapride or terfenadine. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when differentmedications are given together. Ensure your veterinarian is aware of all medications and supplements you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, even if a drug interaction may be anticipated. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and⁄or monitor your pet more closely.

    Cautions: This medication does not have an FDA–approved indication for use in animals, but it is a common and acceptable practice for veterinarians to prescribe this human medication for use in animals. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Pregnant women should use caution when handling this medication. Use only when necessary in breeding or pregnant animals. Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; vomiting; widespread hives and itching.
