product highlights

Sometimes called "Brazilian Waterweed," Elodea Plant can be identified by its eye-catching, light green leaves. In addition to being exceedingly easy to care for, Elodea is a very helpful pond plant in that it helps to reduce algae, clarify water and provide shade for fish. The plant can grow when floating freely or rooted in substrate.

Things to remember:

Water temperature:

Aquatic plants require a tropical community aquarium with water temperatures ranging between 72-78º F (22-26º C). Use an aquarium heater to maintain water temperature.

Adding plants:

Whether you're just starting your aquarium or introducing new plants into your tank, make sure to add only one or two plants at a time.

Lighting:

Most tropical plants require sunlight each day, year round. The duration and consistency are essential for plants to thrive. Natural aquariums must be equipped with the means to provide 12 hours of simulated sunlight each day.

Plant fertilizer:

Fertilizer should only be added according to the dosage instructions on the label, and only when needed (as in the case of a water change). Plants will grow best if fertilized moderately and regularly after water changes rather than given larger quantities of fertilizer on a less-regular basis.

Fish and plants:

Small schooling fish are highly recommended for a natural planted aquarium; larger fish often uproot plants. The adult size and eating habitats of a fish should always be taken into consideration.

Water changes:

Test water weekly to assess water quality. It is recommended that 10% of your aquarium water be changed per week. At the very least, 25% of your aquarium water should be changed per month. For optimal health, regular water changes not only prevent the undesirable accumulation of excess nutrients, but also remove excess nitrates and waste products of the fish and plants.

Aquarium placement:

Place your aquarium in a low-traffic area, away from direct sunlight and drafts.

Planting your natural aquarium:

Foreground plants:
Usually stay very short and help fill in the front part of the aquarium.

Middle ground plants:
These plants grow anywhere form 4-10 inches tall.

Background plants:
These are the fastest-growing and tallest plants.

Things to watch for:

  • Poor growth
  • Brown spots on leaves
  • Plants appear weak, pale green to yellow, stems have few leaves
  • Plants cease to grow and die off
  • Stem plants have long internodes and small leaves

If you notice any of the signs described above, check your aquarium water quality and consult an in-store Aquatics Specialist.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Angel Food I bought the Anacharis Plant (weed) for my 45G. Within a week it already had side sprouts, which I cut and added to my other tank. It grows quickly and with little maintenance. I recently brought 2 Angels and they love this plant. They will take a couple of nibbles whenever they are hungry or need a snack. Depending on how quick the new transplants grow, I may be getting more. I would recommend this plant to anyone looking for an easy live plant to add to their tank(s).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Price and Very Durable I would recommend this plant for any beginner. It is easy on the wallet, very durable, easy to plant, easy to propagate, and you get a lot of stems to plant (I bought 2 clumps and got over 20 stems). It can become invasive if you do not trim or manage your plants, but that maybe something you want. Each is their own when it comes to planted tanks. My fish (Tetras and Cory Catfish) love to swim in and out of these. Just make sure you trim, wash, and check for hitch hikers. At my petsmart they grow these in the same tank as the snails. Do your research and get planting!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Betta loves it! I bought this for my betta so beneficial bacteria would grow in his tank. He loves sleeping and hiding in it as well!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and natural Elodea (aka anacharis) I purchased two elodea today at my local petsmart, they were under the name Anacharis but they're also called waterweeds. They are vibrant and tall, and so many stems with leaves. I placed them in my new cycling Fluval Spec V and added root tabs and flora-viv. We will see how they do, and once it cycled I can add my betta. He will love it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very surprised! Don't get me wrong, I do really love this plant. However, while I was in-store they all looked drastically horrible. More than half the sprouts (in any one bundle) were brown and decaying. I bought one out of spite because the healthy parts looked absolutely gorgeous and my molly fry really needed plants with smaller, more safe hiding places. I was, however, very stunned that the plant survived. Within a few days it had sprouted new growth, and I was rest-assured that I could cut off the brown/decaying parts (do this before you add it to the aquarium or else it'll dirty the water a lot). It looks beautiful and has provided great shelter and food for my fry. :) I did however pay more than the price advertised on here, which I guess I could expect that it would change from store-to-store.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good, but.... I bought two elodea (anachris) plants recently from my local petsmart. They really helped to purify and oxygenate the water, plus they look really nice. Although, about two days after I bought these plants, I noticed my tank was becoming infested with ramshorn snails. I cleaned them out of my tank, but it took some time. I would recommend this plant because it needs no c02 or fertilizer, so it is great for beginners.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from we got this plant a few months ago and let me tell you they grow fast! the first week they grew 5 inches! (we got four) they are also very hardy plants, the the fish chewed of the top part of the plant and we replanted the top which started growing. id recommend this plant to someone with a tall tank not a long.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEAUTIFUL! I LOVE this plant. It grows fast and looks amazing. The only problem I have is that sometimes some leaves come out of the bundle and die very quickly, but the plant soon grows more. It looks amazing with my fish and it doesn't need much care. I don't use plant food and it still grows rapidly. It didn't grow after about 2 weeks, then suddenly, it started growing a lot. There are a few pieces of it that come off (the smaller leaves) but they get easily cleaned up from the filter.
