Spironolactone is an aldosterone antagonist and potassium–sparing diuretic, most often used to help treat congestive heart failure in animals.

Often used in combination with other medications to treat cardiovascular conditions, including congestive heart failure, in dogs and cats.

Can also be used to treat other conditions, including high blood pressure and certain types of fluid retention.

Do not use this medication in pregnant animals or those with serious electrolyte imbalances (e.g., hyperkalemia), acute kidney injury, severe kidney impairment⁄disease, or that are not urinating (anuric).

May be prescribed for other animal species; please consult your veterinarian.

While this drug does not have an FDA–approved indication for all animal uses, it is commonly accepted for veterinarians to prescribe this medication for use in animals.

Active Ingredients: Spironolactone

Usage: Spironolactone Tablets should be given orally as directed by your veterinarian. Please consult your veterinarian before making any changes or discontinuing the prescribed dosing schedule. Wearing gloves is recommended when handling this medication, especially if you are pregnant. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water afterward (even if gloves are worn). Diuretic medications, including spironolactone, may increase the number of times your pet will need to urinate (especially at the start of treatment or when the dose is changed). Ensure your pet always has access to fresh, clean drinking water while taking this medication. If possible, try to give the prescribed dose(s) earlier in the day to help avoid nighttime urinary urgency. This medication is usually recommended to be given with food (or within 30 minutes after feeding). If your pet vomits or appears unwell after receiving a dose on an empty stomach, give future doses with food or a small treat. If vomiting continues, contact your veterinarian.

Missed Doses: Administer the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.

Side Effects: The most common side effects of this medication are increased thirst and⁄or urination, decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and lowered energy level⁄lethargy. These effects are typically mild and resolve over time. In rare cases, severe facial dermatitis (itchy sores) has been reported in cats. Notify your veterinarian immediately if you notice facial sores or scratching while your pet is taking this medication. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet has complete lack of thirst, appetite, and⁄or urination; severe or ongoing vomiting⁄diarrhea; extreme weakness⁄collapse; enlarged breasts or nipples; decreased balance or coordination; appears extremely tired or dizzy; or a racing heartbeat. Notify your veterinarian if your pet experiences any of the effects described above, or if you notice any other side effects that are persistent or troublesome. If you notice anything unusual, please consult your veterinarian.

Precautions: Do NOT use this medication in pregnant animals or those with serious electrolyte imbalances (e.g., high potassium or low sodium levels), Addisonâs disease (hypoadrenocorticism), acute kidney injury, severe kidney impairment⁄disease, or that are not urinating (anuric). This medication is NOT recommended for use in growing dogs. Do NOT use this medication concurrently with any NSAID drugs in animals with kidney insufficiency. Use with caution in animals with reduced kidney function, liver disease, preexisting electrolyte or fluid imbalances, or (uncontrolled) diabetes. Safe use of this medication has not been established and may not be recommended in breeding or lactating animals. Discuss the risks of using this medication with your veterinarian if your pet is in one of these groups. Do not administer to animals with a known history or suspected allergy⁄hypersensitivity to this medication or any of its ingredients. Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, discontinue therapy and call your veterinarian immediately or seek emergency veterinary attention. Symptoms may include (but are not limited to): swollen lips, tongue, face, or airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; and widespread hives or itching.

Drug & Food Interactions: The following drugs* may have potential interactions with this medication: ACE inhibitors (e.g., benazepril, enalapril), antidiabetic agents (including insulins), ARBs (e.g., telmisartan), benzodiazepines (e.g., alprazolam, diazepam), beta blockers (e.g., atenolol, sotalol), blood pressure medications (e.g., amlodipine), CNS depressant drugs (e.g., dexmedetomidine, hydroxyzine, opioids), corticosteroids (e.g., dexamethasone, prednisone), cyclosporine, desoxycorticosterone pivalate (Percorten–V, Zycortal), digoxin, concurrent diuretics (e.g., furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), fludrocortisone, NSAIDs, phenobarbital, phenothiazines (e.g., acepromazine, trimeprazine), potassium supplements, salicylates (e.g., aspirin, bismuth subsalicylate), selegiline, SSRIs (e.g., fluoxetine, sertraline), sulfa–⁄trimethoprim, tramadol, tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline, clomipramine), and warfarin. *NOTE: this may not be a comprehensive list. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together. Please ensure your veterinarian is aware of all medications and supplements that your pet is currently receiving. Your veterinarian may prescribe multiple medications, even if a potential drug interaction may occur. In these instances, your veterinarian may adjust the dosages or monitor your pet more closely.
