    Atropine Ophthalmic Ointment works to block eye muscle receptors. This antimuscarinic is used to treat many conditions, including corneal or uveal disease.

    What Form Does Medication Come In? Ointment

    Dose and Administration: Sold in a tube containing 3 1/2 grams.

    Possible Side Effects: Themost common side effect of Atropine is salivation (upon contact with the mouth). An allergic reaction may also occur, with signs to include:

  • Facial swelling
  • Hives
  • Scratching
  • Sudden onset of diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Shock
  • Seizures
  • Gum paleness
  • Cold limbs
  • Coma

    If you observe any signs of an allergic reaction, pursue emergency veterinary treatment.

    Precautions:

  • Never touch the dropper to any surface, including eyes or hands. This can cause contamination and a subsequent eye infection.
  • Do not rub eye, and prevent blinking as much as possible.
  • Do not rinse the tube.
  • If your pet is taking any other eye medication, wait at least 5 minutes before instilling any other product. Do not administer if the color of the ointment is changed.

    Storage Recommendations: Store in a cool and dry location.

    In Case of Overdose: Call your nearest pet hospital.
