DESCRIPTION: Zycortal Suspension contains Desoxycorticosterone Pivalate. Intended for injection, this medication works as replacement therapy for mineralocorticoid deficiencies in dogs with primary hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's disease).
Key Benefits:
Zycortal is a corticosteroid with mineralocorticoid activity similar to that of aldosterone. It causes the kidneys to retain sodium and chloride iron, and it forces hydrogen ion and potassium excretion to create a water-absorbing osmotic gradient within the renal tubules. This effectively increases extracellular fluid volume, allowing for blood volume expansion, venous return to the heart, and increased cardiac output.
Formulated For: For dogs only.
How is Medication Given? Follow your veterinarian's directions when using this product.
What Results Can I Expect? Zycortal uses Desoxycorticosterone Pivalate to treat hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's disease).
What Form Does Medication Come In? Injectable
Dose and Administration: Sold in a vial containing 4 mL (25 mg per mL).
Possible Side Effects: This product is typically well-tolerated, and side effects are rarely reported. A small percentage of dogs might experience:
Increased blood volume Swelling (edema) Cardiac enlargement Depression Excessive thirst and/or urination Changes in digestion Changes in skin or coat Weakness Injection site reactions, including pain or abscesses Certain reactions may be resolved with adjustments in dosage or interval, or with concomitant administration of a glucocorticoid.
Precautions
Never give do a dog with Desoxycorticosterone Pivalate hypersensitivity. Rehydrate dogs with saline (IV fluid therapy) before beginning treatment with Zycortal if the dog has depleted blood volume (severe hypovolemia), dehydration, prerenal azotemia, or Addisonian crisis (inadequate tissue perfusion). Do not inject intravenously, as this can cause adverse reactions. Efficacy of this product could be affected when Spironolactone or other potassium-sparing diuretics are concomitantly administered. Administer cautiously to dogs with congestive heart disease, edema, severe renal disease, or primary hepatic failure. Sodium retention-related fluid retention can result in excessive weight gain. Not proven safe for use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs, or in puppies under the age of 6 months.
Storage Recommendations: Store in a cool and dry place between 15 degrees C and 30 degrees C (59 degrees F and 86 degrees F). Do not freeze, and use within 120 days of first puncture.
In Case of Overdose: Contact the nearest emergency pet clinic immediately.
