Vetmedin FDA-approved for inodilator use in dogs. Using Pimobendan, this drug improves the life expectancy and quality of life in dogs with congestive heart failure (CHF). When administered every 12 hours, this medication dilates the blood vessels responsible for carrying blood to and from the heart, which reduces the heart's workload. It also improves the ability of the heart muscle to contract. This drug decreases stress on the heart muscle, and it increases cardiac output without raising oxygen or energy consumption. Since dogs with CHF typically have a weak circulatory system, Vetmedin is helpful in allowing the dog to enjoy the activities they've always loved. Aging dogs are more susceptible to heart disease and heart failure. With early diagnosis and treatment, your dog's life can be better and longer. Ask your veterinarian if this medication is right for your dog.
