About this item
DESCRIPTION:

Cyclosporine, the generic alternative to Atopica, is an immunomodulator that is known to work selectively. It is useful in treating eczema (atopic dermatitis) and other conditions.

Key Benefits:

  • Cyclosporine works by interfering with helper T-lymphocyte interleukin production.
  • Unlike other immunosuppressants, it does not kill cells in the immune system.

Formulated For: For dogs older than 6 months.

    How is Medication Given?

  • Administer 1 time or 2 times each day (based on the severity of the condition).
  • To treat atopic dermatitis in dogs, start with 1 daily dose, then gradually decrease frequency to every other day (or less frequently).
  • Oral dosing does not produce a predictable or reliable blood level. For this reason, routine monitoring of therapeutic blood level is suggested when taking this medication.
  • Typically, veterinarians check blood cyclosporine levels 1 to 2 days into therapy, then again at 2- to 4-week intervals.
  • Lowest blood levels should be 250 ng/mL to 1000 ng/mL for cats and 100 ng/mL to 500 ng/mL for dogs.
  • When treating atopic dermatitis with this medication, blood levels typically are not closely monitored since drug concentration within the skin is the important factor (vs. the blood), and skin cyclosporine levels cannot be measured.
  • Although this medication is not FDA-approved for feline use, it is often prescribed for feline use by veterinarians.

What Results Can I Expect? Cyclosporine is useful in treating: Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis); Dry Eye (Keratoconjunctivitis); IMHA (Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia)

What Form Does Medication Come In? Capsules

Dose and Administration: Sold in quantities of 30 capsules in 25, 50, or 100 mg strengths.

Possible Side Effects: The most common side effects associated with Cyclosporine are gastrointestinal upset, including signs like: Inappetence, Vomiting, Diarrhea

Precautions Cyclosporine is known to suppress the immune system, which can cause an increase in susceptibility to infections and the development of neoplasia. If your pet shows any of the following signs of a reaction, consult your veterinarian at once, as they could be early signs of a severe adverse reaction: Fever in excess of 103 degrees F, Painful urination, Tiredness, Sneezing, Coughing, Runny nose.
