Benefits:
Usage: Clindamycin should be given orally as directed by your veterinarian. Administer the complete course of the medication as prescribed, even if your pet's condition has improved. Failure to administer the entire course of treatment may cause recurrence or worsening of the infection.
Missed Doses: Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once.
Side Effects: Side effects may include stomach upset, vomiting, and diarrhea. If your pet develops severe, prolonged, or bloody diarrhea, contact your veterinarian immediately. Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.
Drug & Food Interactions: The following drugs are noted to have potential interactions with clindamycin (but may not be a comprehensive list): aminoglycosides, azole antifungals (e.g., fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole), cyclosporine, phenobarbital, and neuromuscular blocking agents. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together. Ensure your veterinarian is aware of all medications and supplements you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, even if a potential drug interaction may occur. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and⁄or monitor your pet more closely.
Cautions: This medication should NOT be administered to animals with a history of hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to clindamycin or lincomycin. Because of potential adverse gastrointestinal effects, do NOT administer to rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, horses, chinchillas or ruminating animals. Use with caution in animals with severe kidney or liver disease, and in animals receiving neuromuscular blocking agents. Avoid dry pilling solid dosage forms of this medication– try to administer each dose with at least a small amount of food and⁄or water. Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform Vetsource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include, but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; vomiting; widespread hives and itching.
Adverse Reactions: If you are concerned that yourpet has experienced an adverse reaction to this medication, please contact the manufacturer Virbac at 1–800–338–3659 or Vetsource customer service at 877–738–4443.
