Brisk winter walks, rainy day romps and chilly nights on the couch – sometimes our pups need a little extra warmth. That’s where dog coats can help protect and pamper your furry friend. Whether it’s a stylish sweater, a waterproof jacket or a cozy parka, the right dog clothing keeps your pup comfortable no matter the weather. This guide covers the different types of coats, choosing the right kind for pup and how to get them to actually wear it.

Why dogs need coats

A dog coat isn’t just about fashion – it’s about keeping warm & healthy. After all, not every dog is built for the cold. While some breeds have thick, fluffy fur that acts like a built-in winter jacket, others need a little help staying toasty. Small, short-haired and senior dogs are especially vulnerable to cold temperatures, and wet weather can leave any dog shivering. Even dogs with thick coats may need protection from wind, rain or snow. Whether you’re taking your dog outdoors for a winter hike or squeezing in a quick walk during a rainstorm, a well-fitted coat can help keep them warm and dry.

Types of dog coats

Dog coats are designed to serve different conditions and needs while keeping your pup looking good.
  • Dog jackets. These are a great all-purpose option for crisp fall days or light winter weather. Many are water-resistant, making them ideal for misty or drizzly days.
  • Dog parkas. When the temperature drops, parkas offer heavy-duty protection. These are thickly insulated, often with fleece or down, to keep pups warm in freezing temperatures.
  • Dog sweaters. Perfect for layering, dog sweaters add warmth but aren’t waterproof. This option is great for indoors, cool days or extra comfort under a raincoat.
  • Dog raincoats. Raincoats are lightweight, water-resistant and designed to keep your dog dry on rainy walks.
  • Reflective coats. These coats are outfitted with reflective strips that help dogs stay visible during nighttime or early morning walks.
  • Cooling vests. The opposite of a winter coat, these are designed to keep dogs cool in the heat, using moisture-wicking or gel technology.

Choosing the right coat

Picking the perfect dog coat depends on a few factors.
  • Weather conditions. If your dog will be in extreme cold, go for an insulated dog coat. If they just need a little extra warmth, a sweater or jacket will do.
  • Dog size and breed. Short-haired breeds like chihuahuas and greyhounds need more protection than huskies or malamutes.
  • Activity level. If your pup loves running and playing, choose a lightweight, flexible coat that won’t restrict movement.
  • Waterproofing. If your dog hates getting wet, a water-resistant coat will help keep them dry and warm.
  • Ease of use. Look for coats with velcro or buckle closures that make dressing (and undressing) quick and easy.

How to measure your dog for a coat

Getting the right fit is key to making sure your pup stays comfortable. Too tight and they’ll feel restricted. Too loose and the coat won’t do its job. Here’s how to measure:
  1. Neck circumference. Measure all the way around your pup’s neck at the base where the collar sits.
  2. Chest girth. Wrap the tape measure around the widest part of your dog’s chest, just behind the front legs.
  3. Back length. Measure your dog’s back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.
Compare these measurements to the sizing chart for each dog coat to get the best fit.

Tips on getting your dog to wear a coat

Not all dogs take to wearing clothes right away, but with a little patience, your pup can learn to love their new coat.
  • Introduce the coat gradually. Let your dog sniff it and get used to it before trying to put it on.
  • Use treats and praise. Positive reinforcement makes everything better! Give your dog treats while they wear the coat to create a good association.
  • Start with short wear times. Have your dog wear the coat indoors for a few minutes before heading outside.
  • Make sure it’s comfortable. If your dog is stiff or refuses to move, the coat might be too tight or uncomfortable. Try adjusting the fit or choosing a different style.
