Rated 1 out of 5 by from Faulty Lights I bought this after returning a different Top Fin tank because the lights were flickering. I really loved the look of this tank and was excited to use the aquaponics feature. I even picked out some nice Peace Lilies from a garden store for it. Once I set it up I noticed the back row of lights that are under the plant holder were flickering on one side and one of the bulbs is totally out on the other. So we have two totally different tanks with the same problem. The only thing they have in common is that they are the same brand and have the same kind of lights. I'm really disappointed that I will have to return this one too. It isn't a cheap tank, so it's not something that should be overlooked. So just be aware that lights seem to be very cheaply made and prone to being faulty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great for my needs I purchased this tank about a month ago and it is working great. No leaks or light issues as mentioned in the other reviews. I have 3 tetra fish, 2 snails, and some ghost shrimp, as well as decorations and a live plant, and all are thriving. I’ve planted herb seeds on top, which sprouted in 2 days and are about 1.5 inches tall. Of note, I recommend buying extra grow medium, as 7oz is not enough (about $3 for 2 lbs at PetSmart). I also bought herb starter cups, which I removed the bottoms of, and cut holes in the sides to allow plant separation and rooting. I would also recommend 2-3 days with no light after planting seeds to allow proper germination. Hope this helps, don’t be dissuaded by the poor reviews here, it’s a great small tank for he kitchen.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't do it!! Don't do it!! You buy the tank, get it set up, use the filter they give you with the tank and then bam! you can't get anymore filters!! Just got off the phone with customer service, super nice but no resolution. She couldn't understand why you can't get filters either. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from My betta seems to be comfortable in it so far, but I bought this a few days ago because our betta needed a bigger home. Originally I went in looking for the Top Fin tank that is pretty much the same as this one but has a glass top, but the store didn't seem to carry those anymore so I figured we'd take a gamble on this one since it was pretty similar. It was pretty easy to set up, but the instructions they include could be a little clearer/better. The little feet that the tank sit on don't have any grip to them and are pretty slick on the surface we needed to put it on, I don't know if that would have caused any issues once it was filled with water and heavier, but since we have a 2 year old I didn't want to take any chances and put some non-slip padding under it before I filled it up. The planter lid that sits on top leaves about a 1" gap on either side of the lid lengthwise that I wasn't aware of when I bought it, which isn't ideal if you have fish that have the potential to jump out. I'm currently looking into ways to cover that cap, maybe cut some plexi glass to fit over those gaps or somehow rig up a way to cover it with something like net material. It looks nice, I like that the filter is adjustable and on the lowest setting the flow of it doesn't seem to be bothering our betta. It's neat how the filter system is hidden behind the white compartment on the side. There was just enough room to but a 50 watt tank heater in that compartment next to the air pump which looks better and helps free up more room in the area the fish lives. I haven't tried growing any plants yet, but the growing medium it comes with has good reviews and the system itself seems to work well, the water flows from the pump into the growing bed and out the other side down into the tank well, the only noise it makes is a rather enjoyable sound of water falling from the growing bed into the tank. If you're looking for a tank for anything that has potential to get out of the tank, this wouldn't be a good choice unless you are able to make modifications, but otherwise it seems like a nice little tank for housing a few small fish. It does feel rather cheaply made, but that's probably to be expected for it's price. Similar tanks from other brands look like they cost about twice as much as this one did. We'll see how well this one holds up and hopefully figure out what the heck we want to grow in the lid soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tank!! I bought this tank about 3 weeks ago and since then I've successfully planted herbs and they are growing great, also I've added fish to my tank now and everything seems to be working great, it's allowed us to have fresh herbs in our kitchen and it's made cooking more enjoyable. I recommend this set up for any beginner getting into aquaponics

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Beware - tank leaks I purchase this aquarium several weeks ago for my son's two fish. Looked like a very nice tank to place on our center island kitchen counter. The fish looked like they really enjoyed their new tank. I was looking forward in planting some plants (which I didn't get to due to my busy schedule). Two weeks later, it leaked over a gallon of water all over the counter, down the cabinets, and down all over the floor. It did some damage to the contents (cookbooks & wicker baskets) under the cabinets as well as the cabinets themselves. My husband was pretty upset. I assumed that it was an isolated incident/ defect and brought the aquarium tank back to the store (which is over an hour away) for an exchange. The exchanged aquarium tank leaked within 5 hours of being set-up. Yikes! Petsmart needs to investigate if this is reoccurring problem with this tank. Unfortunately getting this addressed has been an issue.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No my best choice! I bought this about a year or so ago because my beta needed more room and the 5 gallon tank I was using had been purchased used and the top had busted and wouldn't stay on any longer. So, this one looked great, had the plants on the top appeared to be what I would enjoy. It doesn't make any noise, except that I added a heater stick unit to it about 6 months ago and that darn thing keeps popping and it shouldn't. But, this is the most difficult unit to have to change the filter as you have to take the top portion off that contains the plants, which means turning the unit off, draining the water, setting the wet top somewhere and taking the filter out. Who wants to do that? You can't clean all the way around the tank with the magnet algae cleaner because it will not work on the filter portion, but I don't mind that. I can reach inside to clean. But the worst part is the fact that it is so hart to change the filter and to feed my fish, I have to put his food off to the side through the opening on one side or the other. This isn't well thought out. Apparently someone who obviously does not own fish came up with this idea. I honestly wish I had never spent my money on this particular aquarium. Now I am stuck with it.

Does anyone know what filter is the replacement? Currently I'm using a silentstream small, but I had to bend it to fit in the filter slot.

How do we plant plants in the clay medium? Will seeds stay in place or wash into the tank? If using a seedling, should we wash away all the dirt on their roots first? Would a cutting work? Thank you in advance!

    Asked by: Plant lover
I actually ordered extra clay pellets because nothing would stay upright with the amount included. If you transfer a plant from soil you will need to wash the dirt away first. My lettuce bolted so I've settled for decorative bamboo for now. My friend has a smaller tank and used wheat grass seed in hers. Its the same sort of set up so I could see it working with this tank, assuming more planting medium was added to prevent seeds washing away.

does the water have to be all the way to the top for the filter system to work

    Asked by: Carp

Should the water be high enough to sit in the planter? It seems like it would be too much water for the plants, but I don't know. More detailed instructions, either online or in the package, are needed.

    Asked by: Squaredkel

Can I get rid of the light for the plant growth? I want to grow peace lilies in it, and I'm afraid that the light is too low for them to grow.
