We bought the flora max red, to help our plants flourish and have the roots kept under the substrate. Every now and then my plants would just be floating on top of the tank before we dI'd this. Setting up the new tank we just bought with the flora max and substrate was easy, just adding water took too long. The water cleared up really well with the clarifyer that was in the bag of flora max. We did rinse the flora max a couple of time first then added it to the tank, put the clean substrate on top and filled it up. It only took under an hour for the water to be crystal clear.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Tido I recommend the Black but not what Petsmart calls the "Red" on here, which is actually "Original".
Following the directions on the bag works fine with the Black, I had no problem. I didn't even need the Clarifier pouch that came with it.
The "Red" / "Original" comes in the same package as the black and says "Requires minimal rinsing" This is far from the truth and the directions should say to "Rinse many times" because of this I wasted 2 weeks cause every time i rinsed it I was thinking "this is the last time" ...and waiting a couple days. I'd have my tank set up by now but I'm still rinsing gravel. I've also wasted a lot of water.

by Niskyracer212 Rinse, rinse, rinse!!
This product is advertised as pre-rinsed but it is dirtier than anything I have ever seen! It is an amazing substrate but if you do not rinse it before scaping your tank you will be in for days of dirty water (written from experience). It holds plant roots fantastic and they grow beautifully full in this substrate. (This product does not lose stars in my book because it is an understood fact to wash all substrates before applying them to a fish tank.)

But I expected this, if you don't, maybe you haven't changed substrate in an established tank before, I'm sure it will clear in a few days. I had rocks and sand, but want to plant my tank, so I switched to this. Expectation is that it will hold my roots and help me move into aquatic plants.
