This litter box and the litter we use changed my life. I am only slightly overstating that. This box, along with a pellet litter (we use Exquisicat pine) reduces smell and eliminates tracking and dust. The pellets break down to a sawdust that you can sift through the grate to the box below (I usually scrape it around rather than simply shaking it - the litter box can be heavy). The sawdust doesn't stick to the grate and will only be damp and stick to the box below if you aren't using enough litter in the box. We have three cats and three boxes and cleaning them is no longer the bane of my existence.
The only downside is that your cat might not cover his #2s, but that's the easiest thing to remove and not the cause of the eye-watering, ammonia smell which the pellet litter virtually eliminates.

For all those having so much trouble with clumps getting stuck in the grate - you are not using enough litter. As one of the reviewers stated that should only happen occasionally when the box runs low.
Having lived outside the US previously, my cats used litter boxes with a raised grate that didn't even use litter and really were best to use - kept the paws dry and were easy to rinse out. However there was no issue using the litter, as I stated, when kept at a deep enough level.
Similarly, if you use clumping litter in a regular box and you are scooping out anything but a small ball, i.e. a 4x6in wide 1/8in thin puddle, you are doing it wrong! You are keeping the litter TOO LOW!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Leroywaggle1 I love it, and so do the cats
I had two standard lidded litter boxes with door flaps for my three cats, and added this one. The cats LOVE it. They will only use this one, and completely ignore the others. And if you keep enough litter in the box, you don't have to worry about any clumps getting stuck in the grate. The only time I've seen that happen (and it was a mild occurrence at that) was when I ran out of litter and the box got a little low.

In theory, this is an awesome product… In practice it was an epic fail.
1). the holes allow both kitty litter AND kitty urine to pass through, so, you end up with the kitty clump stuck on holey part AND an secondary mess to clean up in the under bin part.
2). As you pull up the hole part, kitty liter does not sift through like you picture in your head. An annoying amount will sift through on the sides and get all over the FLOOR around the catcher bin, creating more work!!
3). The clump that sticks to the holly part REALLY STICKS !!!! I mean you have to work hard to get it off, AND as you beat it, those clumps (when they break loose go flying all over the place, leaving you with very large, spread out mess to clean, AND, what kitty litter that did not go through the holly part in the first place, and was not necessarily stuck in the holes will fall around the bin catcher and ONTO the floor, creating more work !!!
4). I used this item for about two months. After the third time, I resolved to taking the product outside, setting up a massive tarp and putting it under this product before I would start the cleaning process. The holey part always had so much kitty clumps stuck (I mean STUCK!!) in the holes and if you tried to shake or beat them out, the clump material goes flying all over the place, and it's just a mess !! My plan was that the spilled and dried kitty clumps that would fall all over the place would hopefully fall onto the tarp, and my clean up was suppose to be somewhat easier… but not really, because .. This DEFEATS the whole purpose of what this thing is suppose to do,which is simplify cleaning.
I want my money back, but, I am past the 1 month return that PetSmart has. I know they'll take it back anyways, but it's the principal here.
Don't make my loss your loss too. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.
