This cage is perfect for our three male rats. Plenty of space with multiple levels and ramps. The whole kit is perfect for a new owner to get started. No mesh floors to hurt their feet, perfect bar spacing and no gaps in the corners. The food isn't the best for rats since it has alfalfa in it but it is only a sample.

I got this cage for my two rats. The cage itself is decent. I don't like the bottom portion of it as I can't see my ratties when they're down there and I did place it on a rather tall dresser to keep out of my 5 yr old's reach. The shelving in it is plastic as well, which doesn't seem to be a problem yet because I cover them with fleece. It was easily put together though. My ratties don't want anything to do with the wheel or the hammock, which is fine I suppose, but the no-drip bottle constantly drips. Maybe I got a defective one, I'm not sure. At any rate, I added a lot to the cage for my rats such as heavier ceramic bowls for food (and water since the bottle constantly leaks), a hidey hole, toys, a hanging ladder, etc. They seem to really like the cage. I didn't use the bedding either because as I said before I line everything with fleece. It's soft on their feet, it adds personality, lasts longer than bedding and can be reused (all you have to do is shake it out and throw in the wash!) and is aesthetically pleasing. I did put a litter pan in the cage, so the bedding will be used as a type of litter. I was disappointed that the food is as terrible as it is. It contains corn and alfalfa which are both really bad for rats as they can't digest it. If you feed your rats corn it needs to be cooked and it shouldn't be given daily. Alfalfa shouldn't be given at all because they can't digest it. I refuse to waste it though so I will dump a little on the counter and disgard the alfalfa and give the rest as a treat maybe twice a week. All things considered, it's no ones fault that my rats don't like the wheel, and I can reline the hammock to make it more cozy. The starter kit is still the best bang for your buck if you can't afford to dish out $150+ for an all metal cage PLUS all the accessories. I will be taking out the wheel to give them more room as well. Might as well seeing as they refuse to use it! Again, it's a great bang for your buck, just be knowledgable about what your pet can eat. There's too many products on the market for rat food and treats that are really bad for them..

I bought this cage because I was getting emergency bottle kittens and needed a new cage. The cage I wanted wasn't on the shelves so I settled for this one. DO NOT GET IT!!! I went to put a shelf in and a tab immediately snapped off. Making it useless. I have an almost $100 cage that is basically useless. They needed both shelves to climb on. Waste of money!

My daughter wanted a pet rat and this was the only cage big enough if we ever wanted two (which she did; rats are not good by themselves). We paid roughly $100 for it, and for that price, I expected better quality. The shelves move around so much, it scares the rats. There isn't enough bedding to cover the entire bottom (good thing we already had bought more). The water bottle leaked and soaked the cage within the first day- so had to buy a new one. The rat chewed through the hanging bed- so had to throw it away. They HATED the food- had to throw it away. The saucer worked for about a month and then it broke (it had never even been out of the cage after set up, so no idea how that could have even happened but it did). Within 2 months, the now adult rats chewed through the bottom of the plastic cage within one night, and we were up for hours in the middle of the night trying to coral them back and figure how to plug the hole temporarily. This cage is only good for mice and hamsters that will not chew through it. Not for rats that are known to be avid chewers (I had no clue they would do this, but apparently it is common- you need a metal or glass bottom!).
