Male Short-Haired Hamster
Lively, social and long lived
I got my black Syrian hamster two and a quarter years ago. When I was handling him in the store he was so sweet and curious and I'm so glad I got him.
After a while of having him he started flicking his little pellets out of his cage and I didn't like that, so I flicked them back in. After a week or two he realized that it did no good so he stopped. Also, at first he would "let loose" on me, and I didn't like that, so I would turn him on his back (he didn't like that) and then I would put him back in his cage-- eventually he made the connection that if he "let loose" on me he would be put away, so he started "holding it" as long as he could, but like most people he had to "go" in the morning, so whenever I woke him up I would put him in a plastic bin and he would "go" immediately because he knew that he could play as soon as he did. Basically he was smart and relatively trainable even though he was a hamster, and he never nipped anyone in his whole life.
I'm writing this because my black hamster Shadow died recently and he was very long lived for a hamster and was healthy and I wanted any people thinking about buying a pet hamster to know that the ones at "Pet Smart" as far as I can tell are healthy and usually friendly.

Great starter Hamster! SO CUTE!!!
I got my pet Syrian hamster around six months ago, and I simply love him! He is so cute and sweet, and I would highly recommend this pet to anyone! I would say this is a great pet for kids 10 and up, and I would only get this pet for your child if your child is responsible enough to take proper care of the hamster. If your child can't do simple things without being told like putting away their backpack or shoes when they get home, then you should probably wait to get them their hamster until they're older and more responsible. However, these hamsters make very great pets, but I wish that they were awake during day so that I could play with Crash, my hamster, during the summer when there's nothing to do! If you have more time during the day instead of at night, I would recommend getting a guinea pig. If your have more time during the night to spend with your pet, I would recommend getting a hamster!!! :) great choice for a pet!

My daughter got this type of hamster for her 10 th. birthday and she just adores him.We were lucky to have such a sweet hamster. At first they may nibble at things they shouldnt but then they seem to know what they can and cannot eat.Ours never nips at us and has been a great companion to my daughter.Encourage your child to take great care of this pet as you would a dog or any other, just because its a tiny pet does not mean you can ignore it.If you want a sweet, calm pet you must handle several times in a day and never ignore it.They must be fed daily and always make sure they have water, they can dehydrate easily.
