I like these guys, i got two of them, a bright orange one and a striped one, the striped one isn't all that active and has already claimed the skull decoration i have and doesn't let the other one in it. The orange one on the other hand, is very active and fun to watch, im putting them in a 20 gallon which should be much better for them considering that they are in a 10 gallon right now. they are just babies right now, about an inch but get to be about 5 inches so i have to put them in the 20 gallon. But overall they are very cool fish, not recommended for new fish keepers.

Best fish if you want color, action, and breeding
I've had Africans for years now and prefer to them to the South Americans due to the variety. They breed easily, but if you are keeping them for this purpose, be prepared to have a separate tank for offspring. You'll lose most babies if you don't. Slight "over crowding" is best as it'll limit the domination of the one male who wants to rule the tank. Add an African Feather Fin or most types of Synodonis and you'll have the most amazing tank ever.

Not bad for beginners
I have been an aquarist for awhile, and cichlids are my favorite fish to keep. They're intelligent, and about as colorful as you can get without buying a salt water setup. Most cichlid purists would rather flush assorted cichlids down the toilet since they are hybrids, but these guys didn't ask to get bred. So, my philosophy is, as long as you don't intend to breed and sell these little guys, then take one home. As others have mentioned, these guys can be aggressive. It's all about territoriality. Give your fish plenty of places to hide. Get cichlid rocks, or caves. Every fish needs to have at least one place to call home. Ensure that your fish are on a proper diet. Are you providing organic food (i.e. flakes) if they require it, or live food (i.e. fry) if they need it? If you balance out your tank, aggression will be minimal. These little guys really are fun to have in your tank.

Love, love, love these little guys!
I can't say how much I love these fish! I have bought several assorted cichlids from PetsMart and they have all done great. I have 3 of the bright orange mixed guys, 3 yellow fish with black horizontal stripes (they look like female auratus cichlids), and a random light blue one, along with some demasoni, yellow labs, and brichardi cichlids. They are all one big happy family. I want to eventually add one or two more from the mixed tank. They have so much personality and spunk. I highly recommend them to anyone who has done their research. Awesome fish! :)
