I purchased this filter for my 40 gallon and I could instantly tell it was doing a better job than my old filter, as I saw a bit of detritus sweep off the substrate and enter the intake, maybe a little too good of a job. The flow coming out of the filter is a bit fast for my taste though. I do however love the fact that this filter does not look like an ancient HOB filter, there is enough room to drop in extra media and the intake pipe is adjustable.

I have been keeping fish for many years and have used several different methods of filtration as well as different brands over the years. HOB in combination with canisters is my preferred combination for optimal water paramaters and for healthy, happy fish. I have 4 tanks currently running and 3 of those have HOB filters on them.
I received my Aqueon Quietflow 30 as part of a 36 Bowfront combo tank package. Since I did not intend to use the filter for that particular tank, I put it aside and left it alone for 6 months, when I decided to set up a 10 gallon tank in my office at home.
This tank is heavily planted and is open-topped, occupied by dwarf cichlids, cory cats, and nerite snails.
There are a lot of things to like about this filter. I really want to give it a four star review.
It has great flow volume. I'm not sure I would trust it to fully filter a 30 gallon tank but I always over filter my tanks.
It's very quiet. I'm not sure why people complain about these being noisy. When the tank is filled to the proper level for the filter there is no suction sound from the motor and the sound level is on par or less than the others I use.
The plastic drip attachment at the front to help aerate water and aid in beneficial bacterial growth actually works surprisingly well for how basic it is.
The intake tube is adjustable for deeper tanks.
The only real con I have with the filter is the lack of adjustable flow rate. The intake strainer slits could be smaller but this can be accomplished by using a mesh screen on the outside of the intake tube to restrict flow slightly or inserting a small piece of sponge ito the bottom of the intake tube to restrict flow. Using a sponge will have an added benefit of colonizing additional benificial bacteria. I don't do this.
So why 1 star?
They break. Quickly. The first one had its impellor seize up just under 3 months after it started getting used. I save all my receipts and the manager where I originally purchased everything was nice enough and I got a brand new, off the shelf, in a box, not part of a kit filter. The second one ran even better than the first one, which led me to believe that I had just gotten a bad one out of the batch.
It is 3 months later as I write this review and the second unit has just died the same death, a seized impellor. Just got home from Petsmart with a new filter, but not an Aqueon.
It is quite possible that this filter can't handle the load of planted tanks and this gums up the impellor. It's also quite possible I just had bad luck happen to me twice.
IDK, 2 dead filters in 6 months is bad news to me. I really liked it when it worked, but I couldn't call this a good product.

Although this filter looked pretty large when I first took it out of the box, I like that only a small portion of it takes up space within the tank. It makes a bit of a waterfall sound, but also seems quite powerful because it filters so well. The fish like the current that comes of it as well. This filter took the place of a side fitting filter, and this one is soooo much better than that one. This one takes up much less room and filters more powerfully.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Edmp I love this filter. I've had it over a year. I occasionally scrub chemical & salt build-up off it. Otherwise it works just fine.
