Been using this 'reconstitute' yourself variety of this product for several months now as it's so much more affordable to purchase it in these brick hard compressed bricks then in its other form; already loosely powdered.
The bags of the loosely powdered variety sell for over $20 each and would yield you the equivalent to just one of these bricks when reconstituted with water so for me its a no brainer.
Here's what I love about this products:
Healthful and made from natural products; coconut husks and shells
No hard pieces to harm your soft and thin skinned beloved amphibians like our toads
Holds the moisture beautifully; not to dry not to wet which is great as too wet causes mold; too dry dries out your amphibians as they require moisture in precise amounts
Non odorous although it does have a very earthy scent to it once reconstituted with water which does subside within about 24 hours or so
SO far it has NOT grown any mold and I keep it moist; not wet constantly this is of key importance for the health of our toads.
Toads love to burrow and hid deep within it and can do so very easily and seem very very happy with it.
Because I often have leftovers as their 15 gallon take won't take the entire 1 brick it works great as a green friendly compost and soil amendment which is what I do with the extras as well as how I repurpose their tank media changes aka: Eco Friendly product.
Negatives: Cant think of any really unless the company were to design 'scored' areas within each brick allowing the user to more easily break off what amount is needed verses having to reconstitute the entire brick whether you need it or not.
It's really a great product and I'm so happy with it as are our Toads. It lasts a long time and really gives you the best of all possible worlds: Green Eco Friendly product, toads love it and its very affordable and clean!

They say you can use this dry and the tortoise would be fine and happy and what not. Well my 1.5 month old tortoises do like to walk around in this stuff but it would get all over their face, and in their necks into the shells. I was worried for my little babies. I would have to wash them off and after a while I just said this is not working. This was recommended to me by many who have tortoises but this just does not work. It stayed in their home for all of two hours before I took them out and stripped the home of all this. It is not fibrous it is more like potting soil soft. With that said I am going to return my remained of the bricks, and use what was soaked already and used in their home as potting soil for their plants. I am going to continue to stick with the bark substrate. They love that stuff and they can walk around without looking messy and covered in anything. Also beware this takes forever to dry and I live in Arizona with lots of sun. If you are looking for something to raise the humidity and what not then go for it, but the bark can do the same and maintain humidity at 50%+. Also this will get everywhere in your home and yard and on you, very messy!

I use this for my tortoise and my skink, and it's GREAT. Amazing value, holds humidity great, breaks down waste, doesn't smell, and is digestible if they swallow some, unlike sand! This is great, I love it, and it's great for them to burrow in.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Kurt99ReptiD I use this for my hermit crabs, they LOVE IT! This retains humidity excellent, and is easy for the crabs to burrow, and molt in. It also never smells, I've kept some in a tank without cleaning it for up to 6 months and it never smelled. And I never once got mold. (Only on leftover food bits) But this is fantastic, and you get a lot for your money!
