That means the distant relative of that cute little shelled reptile you're considering adding to your family walked the earth at the very same time as dinosaurs! Along with their interesting history, tortoises have excellent eyesight and a keen sense of smell. They're fun to care for and fascinating to watch, making them popular pets for families and hobbyists alike.

Things to remember

Lifting & handling
Wait 3-4 days for your pet to adjust to his new surrounding. The try holding him for short amounts of time, and offering food by hand.

Environment
Russian tortoises need to live in a temperate, moderately humid environment; greek tortoises need to live in a warm, dry environment.

Exercise
Allow your tortoise to roam in the yard or house under close, constant supervision a few times a week.

Nutrition
Tortoises are herbivores and eat only plant matter; mostly vegetables and some fruits.

Calcium dust
"Dust" the food with calcium supplement twice a week - ask an associate for details.

Diurnal
Tortoises are active during the day and sleep at night.
