DESCRIPTION:

Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant that is useful in treating certain behavior problems, such as inappropriate urination, spraying, and anxiety in cats, and separation anxiety, noise aversion, and anxiety in dogs.

What Form Does Medication Come In? Tablet

Dose and Administration: Tablets are sold individually in strengths of 10, 25, 50, 75, or 100 mg.

Possible Side Effects: Potential adverse reactions include:

  • Exacerbated disturbance of cardiac rhythm (which is the most dangerous potential side effect of this drug, meaning that an EKG should take place prior to treatment initiation)
  • Dry mouth (and subsequent frequent lip licking)
  • Urinary retention
  • Constipation
  • Changes in blood sugar levels
  • Drowsiness or sedation (most commonly reported side effect)

    Precautions:

  • Tell your veterinarian about all medications your pet may be taking prior to use. This drug can interact with others, including painkillers, antidepressants, sedatives, muscle relaxants, and antihistamines.
  • Never administer to a pregnant dog, or to a dog with diabetes, a liver problem, a heart problem, or a seizure disorder.

    Storage Recommendations: Store in a cool and dry location.
