My boyfriend and I have had our African Sideneck Turtle, Pudge, for two years now. We love this little guy so much that we refer to him as our son. I find that my turtle likes to be near the action, but not the center of attention (unless it's mealtime, then he's all for it). When we first got him, he only wanted to hide in his cave and barely come out for mealtime, but we got him a stand that elevated him from off of the floor to about hip level and he became more active, so active that he will bask when I’m sitting next to him. Turns out he didn’t like people hovering over him, go figure!
He is a very picky eater, mostly floating fish stick and a weekly minnow feeder fish. I tried kale and spinach, but he didn’t appreciate it. I can’t even change the brand of the floating sticks because he will refuse immediately. You have to be careful not to give these turtles too many feeder fish at a time otherwise the fish will just linger and get too big to eat. Pudge is also picky with the color of the fish, so watch out for that, too. Once you get their habitat set up, they don't like too much handling other than food. Two years later he’s willing to let me hand feed him treats.
Once you establish habits and boundaries, they are a wonderful delight to have because they are curious/nosy. He follows me around the room while I’m cleaning and playfully nips at my fingers when I gently tap on the glass. I would recommend them to anyone with older children since they don’t respond well to a lot of physical contact and hovering at first and require a lot of patience and space to get used to it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by SamEK Super cute, and chill.
My boyfriend and I got one of these guys to add to our tank, we already had a red eared slider that was my boyfriends for 10 years prior. We call the AFS Dude(we think a girl) and the RES Turtle(a boy). Dude is very calm and passive, and a picky eater [only eats mealworms]. Gets pushed around a little by Turtle but we are getting a bigger tank soon so it won't be an issue much longer. Would definitely recommend them, so pretty and calm. Mines not much for coming out of the water at all though.

I had gotten one of these guys on one of my "omg i need another pet" skits, and i dont regret it. at first, he refused to eat, but i changed a few more things about his habitat and now he is happy and he LOVES his short time outside a couple times a week. i would highly recommend this species :)

Was an awesome pet, but he never ate.. I don't know why at all. I fed him the food I got in the kit.
