Petsmart really takes care of their bettas, and I'm happy to see clean water and active swimmers every time I go in! Dumbos are my favorite, they're so vibrant and colorful.
Some things to keep in mind when getting a betta fish:
- While the fish CAN live in tiny little bowls, they actually thrive in tanks 5 gallons or larger.
- Despite many thinking a betta cannot live with other fish, that's simply untrue. While yes, they are aggressive, and you should never house males in the same tanks, a male can live with up to six females. They have also been known to get along with ghost shrimp and other tank cleaners (like snails and glass catfish), so long as there's plenty of room for all animals. If you decide to get shrimp, try getting some of the bigger ones in the tank, as it'd be harder for the betta to try and eat them, and provide live plants and little hiding places for them.
- I honestly don't know where this idea came from and why it's so widespread, but you cannot just stick a betta in a vase of water for a plant and assume the two will feed each other. The Betta WILL not survive for very long, they actually need the proper food provided at stores to live.

At first, I was annoyed that they're kept in such tiny containers but then I realized that there's really no other way to display a fish that can be aggressive towards other brightly colored or fan tailed fish. I was at least happy that their cups all seemed very clean and clear and all the fish looked healthy. So far, Petsmart is the only chain pet store I've visited that seems to take care of their bettas. I'll probably return for my next betta.
(still annoyed that they promote tiny tanks for them but that's a whole other issue.)
