Rated 3 out of 5 by DaveIA doesn't seem to be worth it
I've used this for over a month, following the dosing instructions with each weekly water change - with no activated carbon filtering. I have 2 betta aquariums which normally have a pH of around 7.8. This product did absolutely nothing in terms of reducing the pH gradually. It also had no noticeable effect on my fish. It would stain the water, and that's about it. It also contains iodine, which I question the longterm effects of.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Verdecillo Great product at a great price
Blackwater extract is somewhat hard to find (even from PetsMart, it's not available in stores- you have to order it online), but it is worth the effort and the money! I keep Amazonian fish which prefer softer more acidic water conditions. I was having some difficulty getting my aquarium water's pH low (I have quite hard water where I live). I use part distilled water for water changes to keep the water softer, use driftwood and live plants, and even tried a "pH down" liquid product, but still the pH would not go below 7. I added this blackwater extract, and then tested my water a few days later- the pH was at 6.8! (and it will probably lower a little more with continued use). Success! Plus my Amazonian fish do seem more active just as the bottle claims will happen. I am very satisfied, and not only with the quality but also the price- only $3.99! (and PetsMart frequently has promotions of free or 99¢ shipping). Some people might not like the fact that it turns the water light yellowish brown (like green tea color- the bottle label does warn about it), but it is simply the natural tannins from the peat that the product contains and it is actually beneficial to the fish (and mimics the actual water color in the wild where the fish originate from). Great product!
