I bought this in the 1 gallon size for my medium-sized dog, and it works very well. It's a little heavy and awkward when full, so I imagine the larger sizes would be difficult to work with. It didn't bother me because my village has excellent water, so I don't care if my dog's water is filtered, but DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT if you need filtered water for your pet. It is impossible for the filter to stay where it needs to be given the design of this product, and it's therefore impossible to get filtered water.

I bought this for the simple fact that my dog wouldn't be able to make a mess with his water. It is true that he can't do that, but he also can't get enough water out of it to drink. The plastic lid that covers the bottle comes down so low in the bowl, I believe it hinders water from coming out at all. We are lucky to get maybe 2" of water to come out at a time. Last night when I walked by and checked it, there wasn't any at all. The bottle was completely full, but there was none in the bowl. What a joke!!

Pretty handy if your dog drinks a lot! However you do need to be coordinated to make sure you don't spill water when refilling. After filling the water canister keep it spout up and place the empty base on top. Then flip over the entire unit. It'll give you the least amount of drip-age.
However I totally obliterated the water canister when I put it in the dishwasher. Not sure what I was thinking! The base was fine, so I'll keep it as a backup.
Great until the dishwasher snafu. Replaced it with another Petmate water dispenser.

I have had the 4 gallon almost 5 years now. When I purchased it the filter would sometimes come loose and float up. I now have Whole house Reverse Osmosis and do not use the filters. Over the summer I went from 1 German Shepherd and 1 Morkie (Maltese/Yorkie 8 Lb Dog) to 3 German Shepherds and 1 Morkie. The water use to last 5 or 6 days, now it lasts 36 hours. One of my 12 year old twin daughters will fill, clean, assemble and let it sit in the sink until I put it in the floor. Her sister and my 110 Lb wife put it in the floor by themselves. When tightening black cap unscrew 1/8 turn so it will not lock up next time you fill it. After filling, fully assemble (including base) upside at the sink. Then flip it over (Holding sides of jug) and set it in the floor. weight about 32 lbs when full.
