Great addition to my tank so far
I bought two of these on a special sale, and actually had not considered buying cichlids until I set up my second 55-gallon tank. Instead, because these were so cute and so low priced, I impulsively bought them on the assumption that they will be ok in my semi-aggressive 55-gallon tank. So far, so good. I have bala sharks, tinfoil barbs, silver dollars and tiger barbs in the 55, all of which are bigger than the jewels currently. If anything, the jewels have been bullied a bit by my one 4" opaline gourami. Nothing serious, just some chasing around the tank. They are bright yellow in color and add a nice color contrast to all my silver fish. Not sure whether I have a true pair, so not counting on breeding, but I have seen no signs of aggression yet, and given that the existing tankmates are going to continue to grow, these "aggressive" cichlids may not have a chance to dominate my tank.

Love this fish
I just bought a Jewel home yesterday and love it. so far she seems to hold her ground with her bully convict and will fight back, but would prefer to swim away when possible. Great eater, and very active. I think I will add another Jewel to the tank to help keep the attention off of the previous one. I had a few fish who didnt hold up to the convict, so this was trial and error and looks good so far

sad how these fish get a bad rep!
its sad to see how people complain about getting a cichlid, and then complain because it ripped the fins off your goldfish ... or terrorized all your community fish. these fish are known for their aggression, and any Petsmart worker will tell you they can be aggressive. i did some research and went with a bolivian ram, and a ram cichlid. they are the most dosile ram species and are shy but social. please do your research on these beautiful fish ... and dont put the aggressive ones in with your mollies and goldfish!!
