Drinkwell Original Pet Fountain
Durable, reliable, cats love it!
This is an update review: I've had the Drinkwell for almost 4 years now, still with the original motor and all parts. Easy to set up and easy to maintain, we only use regular tap water. Most importantly, our cat loves it and drinks far more often than he did from a stationary water dish. There are a couple of general things to follow to get long life from this product:
1. When disassembling for cleaning, use a small amount of Vaseline on the motor o-ring. This will ensure no leakage and ease removal of the motor - otherwise you can put stress on the plastic causing hairline cracks that will leak...this one simple precaution eliminates that concern.
2. Clean weekly! ANY water bowl will build up yucky deposits otherwise. I both and clean and dishwasher clean the Drinkwell, either method is safe and works well. I know they do not claim "dishwasher safe", but it certainly is!
I will say that for some folks, the motor may be a bit too noisy (does not bother us, nor our cat), a submersible motor type may be better for those who are bothered by motor noise.
To those who say cleaning is difficult? 10 minutes to clean by hand #I use a bottle brush to get the tight areas. a toothbrush will work as well), or toss in the dishwasher. I can not understand any cat owner unwilling to spend 10 minutes or so a week to keep it clean and safe for their cats!

My roommate and I bought this about four of months ago when it was on sale. We had been looking at it for a while, but never had the funds till then. We had been considering one because she loves to drink out of faucets and she drank out of a display fountain I had until it went dry and burn out. It took her about an hour to get used to the noise but once she did she took to it like a duck in water. It is very easy to put together and disassemble for cleaning and cleaning takes max 10 minutes. Bonus for me is the soothing sound of running water. The only criticism I have is there is not really a noticeable difference in the flow rates when you adjust the lever. I honestly don't know which way is supposed to increase and which is suppose to decrease and that may be a problem for some cats/pets.

Our older dog was having problem drinking from various water bowls. However, no issues if we moved the water around with our finger. So i thought i would give this a try. The combination of the multilevel bowl (splash zone + bowl bottom so we could see the break int the water) and the water stream and movement was exactly what our older guy needed. We are very happy with the product, including the 50 oz reservoir. More importantly, our dog is happy and healthier. Very good!

It took my big boy about 10 seconds to realize he could drink from a flowing stream again. He had always drank from the tub faucet until I moved in here where it is too high for him. He had to go to a bowl where he made a mess. He still makes a mess, but he's a happy cat!!
