by dld1717 I bought the Fluval 50, same filter as pictured, only a little larger. I bought it for my 13g nano reef tank. I purposely picked the larger filter with higher throughput to create enough current for a saltwater tank. It's the perfect filter for my tank! I love the large media basket. I use a combination of Fluval filter media and cut my own filtration media as well. It's easy to change, easy to clean. The filter runs silently with no vibration, provides just the right current and keeps my tank super clean! The speed of the water throughput is adjustable! My clownfish and corals are all doing well. The only thing I would change about it, is to make the intake nozzle longer (or adjustable) so that it reaches to the bottom of the aquarium. I remedied this by buying a piece of clear tubing from Ace Hardware and used it to extend the intake nozzle. You can't go wrong with this filter! I am extremely happy with my purchase!

I worked in Pet Care at PetSmart for over a year, so I know how to properly maintain an aquarium. However, the pumps are cheaply made and start to wear out after 6 months. It starts when plugging the pump back in after the water change & even though I prime the pump, nothing happens. No hum or anything from the motor. I smack the motor and it starts running. This continues to get worse over the next couple of months until it finally dies. I can understand that sometimes there are anomalies, rare faulty products, but I've had 3 burn up in the last 2 years. I just lost pump number 2 in the last 14 months.

I was under the impression that this was the best filter how ever the filter media started to smell 3 weeks from buying so I wouldn't recommend it
