After hearing horror stories from people who chose to go the dental bone route from puppyhood and ended up paying $6000 in canine dental work for their senior dog, I decided to purchase a toothbrush for my dog who recently graduated to adulthood. Naturally, I chose a toothbrush for adult dogs. Never thought that there should be a dog-size label on the toothbrush, but I really wish there had been! My dog is only 9.4 pounds, so in order to actually get this huge toothbrush all the way to his molars, I need to crank his mouth WAAAAY open with my fingers. It doesn't really bother me, and the dog is getting used to it (pretending that brushing teeth is part of his training session, so we're doing a minute or so every day until he sits still by himself), but I wish there was a lovely toothbrush like this that was meant for smaller mouths.
Other than size, I think that this works very well. I know my dog is going to destroy this toothbrush quickly because I am letting him lick and chew on it during training just so he becomes more comfortable with it. Maybe when I need to replace it I will get the puppy version, and see if that helps with the jaw-cranking effort.
