by TomNC Absolutely worth it. Works in a matter of a day.
When you come home on a lunch break to see your little fur baby laying on the bed with blood peering through the fur, you start to panic. And when you gently move the fur to expose a spot that is literally the size of a fist, that makes you panic even more... You take to Google to hopefully find out what this may be seeing that nothing the vets prescribed (steroids and a topical spray) worked last year and with costs around $425 after multiple visits (Down to about $150 when submitted to Pet Insurance) trying that route just seems daunting. You find that quite a few people have the same situation with their fur babies and it turned out to be "Hot Spots".
You then quickly embark on a Google search journey for the quickest remedy to sooth your “child’s” Hot Spot pain when you come across a product on Petsmart.com "Dog MD™ Maximum Defense Hot Spot Skin Remedy" that can be picked up today at your local Petsmart, but at the time of your research only had one review, but it was a 5 Star rating stating “IT WORKS....GET IT”. What do you do? What do you do..? We have all seen these types of reviews and end up taking them with a grain of salt (Like I did).
So you do a little more research to find out what its active ingredient is… And it turns out to be “Benzalkonium chloride”. You start to research that and you find other 10, 20 and even 30 reviews on the internet of products that have the same active ingredient that also have 5-star ratings and state that “it works.” for Hot Spots.
Could this be what you have been looking for? The “magic” topical gel that relieves your fur baby’s pain? To answer the question simply… YES!!! It does work. For my pup it was like a literal night a day difference 6 hours after the application of the Dog MD Hot Spot Gel...
To answer the question in a more precise and complete manner; YES!!! It does work but you need to make sure you follow the instructions on the back of the bottle. Written out below with my findings added:
1) Trim the hair around the sore (This will make it easier to clean and apply the gel)
2) Wash the area prior to application with mild shampoo (I used baby shampoo) and gently pat it to dry the spot
3) **Step added** Wash again with just water to remove any possible leftover soap residue.
4) Apply using the applicator tip works but I found that a gauze pad works better to spread the gel lightly
5) Repeat the steps twice daily
1) Right after first cleaning/trimming the hair
2) 6 Hours after the first Dog MD Gel application
I hope this review helps others come to a much quicker decision than I did about this product as it will save your pup time in pain, money in your wallet for vet visits and prescription meds as well as the overall satisfaction of making your loved one feel better.

I was unsure about buying at first since there were no reviews. But I figured it was worth a try. This stuff works!!!! My Min Pin has allergies in the Spring and her belly always breaks out in these sores. They start out as little pimples and then from her licking they run into sores. I have been to the vet several times with no fix and to a Homeopathic vet which helped but still not 100%. She just recently had a rash and it was bad. I purchased this at PetSmart and also got her a cone. After just 2 days her belly is pretty much all dried up and clean.
